The new school year...2014-2015
The school year is almost upon us! In the spirit of starting something new, I am going to be moving this blog to the edublog site. I find it a bit more user friendly for some of the plans I have in store for the school year regarding students and blogging. With that in mind, the way to access the regular updates about what is going on in my room, starting on September 2nd, 2014, will be: mrstulp.edublogs.org I hope you'll all continue to check in at the different address!

We did it! We made it to the end of the year!
Final exams came and went and marks are all in! This blog will be dormant now until next September when the students come back to school.
I am looking at the possibility of switching to Edublogs since it seems more compatible with some of the ideas I have for next year; it allows me to upload handouts for students that miss, and I can enroll them in classrooms for discussions. If that happens, I will post the link here sometime in August or September!
Have a great summer everyone!

June 17-20, 2014
There isn't a lot of need to post for this week. We are finishing up units and kids are using the time to make sure their assignments are all finished before final exams which start next week. The ELA 20s have a speech to do starting tomorrow, the AP 30s have a presentation due Friday, the ELA B 30s are finishing up The Great Escape, the AP 10s will do some exam prep, and the AP 20s are finished regular course and write the multiple choice section of their exam tomorrow.
The end is drawing near!

We began watching The Great Escape to finish up our study of Night. The students will see information about the non-fiction book and video on their final exam.
Period 4--AP 10
The students requested seeing A Midsummer Night's Dream to see some of the comedy that was hard to visualize when reading the play.
Period 5--Mentor period
The grade 12s have a work period.

June 13, 2014
This is grad day and as one of the coordinators, I am off getting things in place for the day. My sub plans for the remaining classes are more or less just work periods as everyone is trying to finish up their work before the end of the year.

June 12, 2014
Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30
As much as they can concentrate the day before grad, the students are trying to get a few assignments finished up.
Period 2 & 3--ELA B 30
We finished our virtual tour of Auschwitz and Birkenau and then took the last ten minutes of class to watch the liberation scene from Band of Brothers so the students could get an idea of what it must have been like. It was a very powerful scene. In period 3, the grads had rehearsal, so we zoomed off to the RecPlex to get ready for tomorrow's big day.
Period 4--ELA 20
The grade 11s continued our visual study of Huckleberry Finn. We stopped along the way to look at the moral dilemmas facing both Huck and Jim as the young protagonists learns some hard lessons growing up.
Period 5--AP 10
We finished reading A Midsummer Night's Dream. The students had some time to complete their last assignment on the reading.

Period 1 & 2--ELA 20
The students had a bit more time to finish their questions from the radio-play Medicine River. We took them up together and had a good discussion about the play. In the second period of the double, I introduced the last piece of "literature" we'll be studying. We are going to look at the visual representation of Huckleberry Finn. It contains some of the same themes as To Kill A Mockingbird but also looks at the concept of growing up and how events cause children to go through various stages of maturation as their moral compass forms. We barely started looking at Huck Finn, so will continue tomorrow.
Period 3--AP 30/ELA A 30
The students are reading and working on their assignments.
Period 4--ELA B 30
We finished the non-fiction book Night. After this, we read his acceptance speech of the Nobel Peace Prize and then started a virtual tour of Auschwitz and Birkenau. We will carry on with this tomorrow.
Period 5--AP 10
The students had a bit of time to finish finding their most important quotation. Then, we started reading Act V and the students are treated to the real hilarity of the play. We will finish up the play tomorrow.
Period 6--AP 20
This class is for the students to work on their big question, multi-media assignment based on The Crucible.

Period 1--ELA B 30
We are almost finished reading Night. The students remained incredibly respectful as we were reading about the forced march Eli made in the middle of winter. We will finish the book tomorrow.
Period 2 & 3--AP 30/ELA A 30
The students continue to read and work on their assignments. They need to have April Raintree read for Monday.
Period 4--ELA 20

Period 5--AP 10
We finished up Act III and read through Act IV today. The students had a bit of time to choose the most significant quotation from each act and include a paragraph explaining why that is the most important selection of the Act. They will have time to finish this tomorrow before we continue reading Act V.

Period 1--ELA 20
We began a play called Medicine River based on Thomas King's novel by the same name. For much of this period, we did some background work and then got into the reading of the play.
Period 2--AP 30
The students have this week to read April Raintree as well as work on their Canadian literature assignments.
Period 3--ELA B 30
We reviewed what we have read so far in Night and then continued on with the story. The grade 12s have been excellent listeners as we make our way through this weighty book.
Period 4--AP 10
We almost finished reading Act III of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The misunderstandings are starting to come one on top of the other!
Period 5 & 6--AP 20
The students are doing a timed write, as promised, and then used the second class to work on their multi-media assignment. The assignment requires them to examine a question left over from the play and search for the answer.

June 6, 2014
This was a pretty easy day!
Period 1--ELA 20
They needed one more class to finish up their Reading Assessments, so this was that last class.
Period 2--AP 30
Most of the graduating class was working at OES track to run the concession. The few that made it to class had the time to work on their assignments or read April Raintree.
Period 3--ELA B 30
Again, most of the graduating class was next door at OES; they had time to finish up their various assignments.
Period 4--AP 10
The students needed some more time to work on their assignments--annotations and a formal essay. They used this time very well.
Period 5--Mentor
This was a work period for the very few students who showed up.

We continued to read April Raintree, but the kids were on their own for reading today.
Period 3--ELA B 30
We reviewed a bit from yesterday's double period and then delved back into the reading of Night. It creates interesting conversation during the reading of this.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
The students requested a work period, so they've got it. They are working on their essays and/or annotations. They will also have tomorrow as a work period.
Period 6--AP 20
We are into Act IV of The Crucible and continued reading. We finished to the end of the act and planned out our last few classes before final exams.

Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30
We continued with our reading of April Raintree.
Period 2 & 3--ELA B 30
We did a simulation of what it would be like to be crowded in a rail car. The kids could barely last 10 minutes being that close to one another, so imagine what it would have been like for days. We continued our reading of Night. As always, the kids are very respectful during the reading of this book.
Period 4--ELA 20
We continued working on our reading assessment. They will need one more class to finish up.
Period 5--AP 10
After finishing up Act II, the students took some time to choose the most important quotation from each act and explain why (in a paragraph).

Period 3--AP 30
We kept up with our reading of April Raintree.
Period 4--ELA B 30
The students listened as I continued to read Night. We are stopping and discussing various aspects of the story.

The last month of school! We're nearing the home stretch!
Period 1--ELA B 30
I reminded them of their due date for the persuasive essay, which is Monday, June 9th. We then started in on the novel Night by Elie Wiesel. We looked at some images from the Holocaust and World War II to give the students a visual understanding of some of the situations that Wiesel recounts. We started reading the first chapter but will continue with this tomorrow.
Period 2 & 3--AP 30
They were reminded of their due dates for the Canadian literature assignment with is June 16th. I introduced the novel April Raintree for them where we looked at some stereotypes of First Nations people in Canada and then discussed various events through Canadian history such as treaties and residential schools. We are reading this orally, as a break from the rigour of the past several months.
Period 4--ELA 20
We are looking at some poetry from Gordie Carle, a poet from LaRonge, Sk. We read a few together and the students have some assignments to do with the poetry.
Period 5--AP 10
We did our literary devices quiz. Then, we started in on A Midsummer Night's Dream. I wrote down a character map and gave a brief outline of the story and we got down to business with reading the play.

May 30, 2014
As we get closer to the end of the school year, it seems we get busier and busier. This is what Friday looked like while I was away at an AP meeting.
Period 1—ELA 20
We are
working on inferencing and have gone through charts and newspaper
articles. They were given a handout on
nursery rhymes yesterday and were supposed to try to infer the real meaning. After they have a few more minutes to infer
the meanings, give them the “real” options and discuss. It would be fun if they could make up a
nursery rhyme about an issue or even (the big storm). The students came up with a limerick!
Period 2—AP 30/ELA A 30
They are
working on a Canadian novel/Canadian short story assignment. They can continue working on this.
Period 3—ELA B 30
They are
working on their Chaucer persuasive essay. They had this class to try to complete it.
Period 4—AP 10
They are
working on either their Dr. Jekyll and
Mr. Hyde annotations or their Fahrenheit
451 essay.
Period 5 & 6—AP 20
We are in
Act III of The Crucible. We continued our reading to the end of the act and then the students had a "cause and effect" worksheet for it.
Thursday, 29 May 2014
May 29, 2014
It was an exciting start to the day with the massive storm last night that left us with out power. Nevertheless, the show must go on and the students showed up anyway! Fortunately, the power came back on within half an hour so it was business as usual.
Period 1--ELA 20
We finished discussing the news article on rural schools out performing urban schools in Saskatchewan. We looked at the information given as well as the information that was omitted. We had some good discussion about the differences between the two types of schools. In addition, we looked at the actual report the article was talking about and it cleared up a few questions as well as sparked a few more. Before the end of the class, they were given a handout with nursery rhymes to see if they could infer the information from there. We didn't get far into this, so we'll continue tomorrow.
Period 2--AP 30
Our discussion of Alias Grace continued with some interesting insights about the novel. The students continued working on their assignment.
Period 3--ELA B 30
They had this class to work on their persuasive essay. I was able to find a sample to show them, and even though it was weak, they got the general idea of how to formulate and structure the paper.
Period 4--AP 10
They continued working on their Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde essay.

Period 1--ELA 20
We continued with and finished our look at reading graphs today by having a look at some charts about the Saskatchewan graduation rates. Once we finished with this, there were only a few minutes left in the class but we were able to read a newspaper article about Saskatchewan high school rankings. We will have to finish up with this tomorrow.
Period 2--ELA A 30/AP 30
We spent more time than we should have getting the AP students logged onto the apscore.org website to get them set up to pick up their exam scores this summer. After this, they continued creating questions from their novel to guide us in a discussion. We started with Alias Grace today and will need to finish that up tomorrow. The other novel will get some time, and then we'll discuss the group that was reading short stories.
Period 3--ELA B 30
The students are finished with the tales from Chaucer and now have to write a persuasive essay that outlines who the winner of the free dinner should be. This can be done either in first person point of view or third. It is up to the writer. We reviewed persuasive essays and then the students were given some time to work on them.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
They had this class to work on their reading of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Most of them were nearing the finish with reading this.

Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30
We finished our discussion on Canadian literature by looking at the characteristics of the genre and making comparisons to other Canadian works they've read. From here, they were put into their reading groups and had to come up with 10 (for the novels) or 5 (for the short stories) questions about their reading.
Period 2 & 3--ELA B 30
We had to finish with some questions from "The Miller's Tale," so we took them up together. We also viewed "The Wife of Bath's Tale" which will be one of their options in their assignment. After the viewing, they had various questions to answer to help with deeper comprehension of the viewing, including technical aspects of the illustrations. Before the end of class, we reviewed "The Pardoner's Tale" and I allowed them a chance to view "The Merchant's Tale" too.
Period 4--ELA 20
We spent the period going over reading graphs and deciphering what the graphs show us vs. the information that is not included. If nothing else, we examined the concept of data and statistics and how they can be manipulated in order to create data for consumer consumption.
Period 5--AP 10
We had a presentation from one of the students who will be leaving and wanted to finish things up. The students were then allowed this last class to work on their essay. It is due June 13th.

Period 1 & 2--ELA 20
The students needed some time to finish their various assignments that are overdue so I gave them this double in an attempt to clean some of it up. I was able to work with a few students who needed a bit of guidance to get things finished, so this was good!
Period 3--AP 30
We started looking at some of the characteristics of Canadian literature. This created some interesting conversation about Canada and our history and how it's depicted in literature.
Period 4--ELA B 30
We finally finished reading "The Miller's Tale" today and the students enjoyed it. They are always surprised that such a risque story is in our curriculum! It's always entertaining. We had a few questions for deeper understanding of the tale, and didn't quite get through it, so we will finish this up then.
Period 5--AP 10
Most of this class was gone on a French field trip. Those of us that were there worked hard on the Fahrenheit 451 essay.
Period 6--AP 20
We finished reading Act II of The Crucible and then the girls worked on their poem assignment.

I've fallen off the blogging wagon again! My apologies. It has been a crazy time. An overview of the work we've been doing this passed week follows:
AP 30/ELA 30--They have needed to finish some assignments (including Over Canada and some other overdue works), so they had time to catch up on this.
ELA B 30
We are working our way through some tales of Chaucer as well as had some time to finish the Prologue assignment. The tales we are looking at are: "The Miller's Tale," "The Pardoner's Tale," "The Knight's Tale," and "The Wife of Bath's Tale." We have a bit more to do with finishing up these tales throughout the rest of the week.
ELA 20
We are doing some work with some inferencing lessons where students pay attention to how they know the information that they do.
AP 10
We are working on two things: their essay for Fahrenheit 451 and reading and annotating Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
AP 20
We have an assignment with The Crucible where the students have to write a poem from one of the men's point of view. We are into Act II for reading.

And we're back after the long weekend! I hope everyone is rested up after four days of no school! This is what our day looked like. I also won't be here for the next day or two due to a family commitment, but I will update the blog when I am back on Friday.
Period 1--ELA 20
We finished reading "Dr. Heideggar's Experiment" and the students had some time to work on some comprehension questions to accompany them. We will take up the answers tomorrow.
Period 2--AP 30/ELA A 30
They are working on their Over Canada assignment and will do so tomorrow as well.
Period 3--ELA B 30
We reviewed the "Knight's Tale" as well as the "Pardoner's Tale." With the "Knight's Tale" we took up the questions and discussed the various themes as a part of the tale.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
We had lots of time to work on our Fahrenheit 451 essays. Since I'm not here tomorrow, I did introduce the novella of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the students so they have some idea of what they will be hearing with the guest teacher.
Period 6--AP 20
We accomplished quite a bit today. We reviewed the information on the narrative passages in the play as well as character motivation. To bridge between Act I and II, we came up with 15+ questions that arise as a result of the action in Act I. We will see how many of these questions we can answer by the end of the play. To finish it, we did a bit of a review of Act I through a quick quiz and then went over the answers together.

Period 1--AP 30
The students were given more time to work on their Over Canada assignments.
Period 2 & 3--ELA B 30
We were going to move on with Chaucer but many of the students needed me to backtrack and show them exemplars of previous assignments that I have for their Prologue assignments. With this better plan in mind, many of them were able to use this double class to work on this assignment in a much more productive manner. We will continue with the tales tomorrow.
Period 4--ELA 20
We had an entertaining discussion of age categories with this class as it would lead into our short story for the day. We also looked at the "pros and cons" of growing old and the students had a lot of fun insights into the aging process (some more accurate than others!). After this, we started reading "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" but we didn't get all the way through the story before the bell rang.
Period 5--AP 10
The students are working on their Fahrenheit 451 essay.
NOTE: There is no school for students tomorrow as they have a day off while teachers are at Professional Development, nor is there school on Monday due to the Victoria Day long weekend. We will see students back on Tuesday!

We were at our Sectional track meet, so there were a lot of kids missing for the day. This is what it was for those who were still in attendance.
Period 1 & 2--ELA 20
They had the option to work on their various assignments or to begin a new short story. They elected to finish up assignments and worked very well.
Period 3--AP 30/ELA A 30
They were watching Over Canada yesterday and just finished it before the bell rang today. They have an assignment to do with this where they have to choose two of four options and write about them. They can have this class period to work on them.
Period 4--ELA B 30
We watched "The Knight's Tale" yesterday, but since I wanted to do something with them about this, they will need to re-watch it, so we'll do that when I'm there. They had "The Pardoner's Tale" read to them and looked at a few questions.
Period 5--AP 10
They are working on their Fahrenheit 451 essay questions.
Period 6--AP 20
They continued with their study of the explicatory narratives and the extra information found in each of them about the various characters. We will begin reading Act II next ELA class.

May 13, 2014
Period 1--ELA B 30
We reviewed their various characters and went through the few remaining ones for discussion. After this, we are getting into the Tales themselves and we start with "The Knight's Tale." We viewed this short excerpt and will review tomorrow.
Period 2 & 3--AP 30
This is our first class together since they wrote their exam, so we discussed how they felt after writing it...most just feel relief! We took a celebratory walk (to the doughnut shop) and composed a sonnet about doughnuts to justify our excursion! After this, we settled into watching a documentary on Canadian landscapes called Over Canada. They will work on the assignment that goes with it tomorrow.
Period 4--ELA 20
We reviewed the essay they read yesterday ("May the Best Cheater Win") and then read "The High of an Honest Win" together as a class. We ran out of time before we could compare/contrast them, but they will get some time to do that tomorrow.
Period 5--AP 10
We finally finished our power point of information from the novel and then we moved onto breaking down the prompts. We didn't quite finish, but I will get them the break down of the prompts for tomorrow's class.

I was home with a sick kid, but this is what the day was like:
Period 1--ELA 20
They discussed the concept of cheating (various types) and the morality of it. Then, they read an essay that dealt with how people view cheating and its consequences. We will finish this up tomorrow.
Period 2--AP 30
They need this time to complete assignments and reading.
Period 3--ELA B 30
They had this time to work on their Prologue assignment.
Period 4--AP 10
They used this time to work on their essay for Fahrenheit 451.
Period 5 & 6--AP 20
We continued reading The Crucible. After finishing Act I, they were given a handout that asked them to review the explicatory narrative that Miller uses throughout. We looked at the pros and cons of it as well as its purpose in the play. After this, they used those passages to help flesh out the characters. They will need more time to finish.

This was our school track meet, so there were a number of students missing. Nevertheless, classes were to continue as usual for the students who were here.
Period 1--ELA 20
The students had this one last class to clean up their various assignments. It's back to work on Monday.
Period 2--AP/ELA A 30
They are working on reading their novel/short stories and finishing up their assignments.
Period 3--ELA B 30
They have time to work on their General Prologue assignment.
Period 4--AP 10

Sorry I didn't have this up sooner--with all the AP exams going on right now and track, things are a little hectic!
Period 1--ELA 20
This was a work period for the kids to get caught up on various assignments that we still need to have handed in.
Period 2--AP 30
These kids were writing their Advanced Placement exam....good luck to them
Period 3--ELA B 30
We continued with the characters of Chaucer's Prologue. We are almost ready to move onto our assignment.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
We continued going over various aspects of the novel as a class. We had some excellent discussions about this.
Period 6--AP 20
The students are progressing through the play and are being introduced to the various characters in Act I.

Period 1--AP 30
This is our last class before the big day! Tomorrow is the exam day! We went over a few last minute things about writing and the multiple choice and I tried to allay any fears they have. They will do fine!
Period 2 & 3--ELA B 30
This was a "grab-bag" kind of class today. We had some boasts to finish up. I believe there are just two or three more left to deliver. After this, we returned to Chaucer to continue our study of the "General Prologue." We had to stop in the second class and fill out forms for our field trip, so it took some time to go over this, and then we, once again, returned to Chaucer.
Period 4--ELA 20
I went through the Freytag Pyramid of Plot Development today which reviewed a lot of concepts for the students. They listened well and learned a lot (or reviewed it as the case may be). They will have tomorrow to work on assignments.
Period 5--AP 10
This class was derailed early on as we got off track of our discussion of Fahrenheit 451 and spent much of the class talking about truant officers (of old). We eventually got on track, but we'll have to play a bit of "catch up" tomorrow!

We were missing our grade 10s and 11s today, so it was just grade 12s in house for the day.
Period 3--AP 30
We reviewed some of the things they need to consider before they write their exam on Thursday. Nerves are starting to set in!
ELA A 30--They continued to clean up assignments before both sides of the class come together.
Period 4--ELA B 30
We were able to hear a few more boasts today and then went back to Chaucer and learning more about each of the characters. The last of the boasts should happen tomorrow and then it's Chaucer for the foreseeable future!

Period 1--ELA B 30
The grade 12s had to have their boasts from Beowulf ready to go. Several of them were ready, but not all. Regardless, we heard several of them and enjoyed the entertainment. After this, the students were given a few minutes to continue their group work on their Chaucer character. We just started to share information when the bell rang.
Period 2 & 3--AP 30
The APs are doing a simulation of the essay portion. They had two hours to write three essays. Almost all were able to do so.
ELA A 30
They are working on an essay called "Pretty Like a White Boy: The Adventures of a Blue Eyed Ojibwa" and we will take it up on Thursday. They were also given three short stories to work on for the next major assignment.
Period 4--ELA 20
We finished reading "The Children's Story." We will plot this out with the Freytag Pyramid of Plot Development but need to review that before we do so. We ran out of time to get very far in this.
Period 5--AP 10
Mr. Harrison led the class through some discussion and group work about other themes in the novel.

My apologies...I fell off the blogging wagon! Suffice it to say, things are getting busy!
This is what the day looked like last Friday:
Period 1--ELA 20
We started reading a story called the "Children's Story" which examines childhood memories and really shows how easy it is to influence young children. The story is extensive and we stopped often to discuss as we read, so we didn't finish it up but will do so on Monday.
Period 2--AP 30
We continued to work through multiple choice questions in an effort to ready ourselves for the big exam on the 8th.
Period 3--ELA B 30
The students were put into groups to "translate" the character to which they were assigned. They are working through this using cues and clues given on the side of the reading, so hopefully it helps as they work through this example of Middle English.
Period 4--AP 10
The students were taught by Mr. Harrison who took them through the theme of censorship as it applies to Fahrenheit 451. They had time in the computer lab to research banned books and then worked on an assignment with the novel.
Period 5 & 6--AP 20
We did sneak to the Seniors' Tea for a few minutes to watch some of the presenters but then we were down to business. Each group presented their information that they had to research. This provided an excellent framework to put the students in the right mind as they start reading the play. We did get a start in our reading and are just coming to some of the interesting things! We will carry on next week.

Period 1--ELA 20
We had a lot of fun with creative writing today. The students were given 10 words from the dictionary and had to create a story using at least six of them. Once they were finished this, we chose 10 more words from the dictionary, switched books randomly with a classmate, and the students had to finish the original story with at least six of the next words. At the end of the class, they were given their own books back to look at and had fun reading the completed story.
Period 2--AP 30
We did pre-registration to get ready for the AP exams that start next week.
Period 3--ELA B 30
We continued with the background information to get ready for our reading of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
Period 4--AP 10
Mr. Harrison, a student teacher from the U of S, taught the students the introductory information about Fahrenheit 451. They went through the concept of fascism, anarchy, dissidents, and dictatorships and applied them to the novel. We also read through Dr. Seuss's Yertle the Turtle to examine how it is an allegory of WWII and Hitler. This connects with the novel through the concept of dictatorship.
Period 5--Mentor

Period 1--ELA 20
We read the poem "The Credo" and then examined which would be the most important lesson from the poem. After this, they had some time to work on an assignment about maxims. They have to choose a maxim and then indicate whether they agree with it or not. They will get a bit more time to work on this tomorrow.
Period 2--AP 30/ELA A 30
The students are split into 5 groups; each is in charge of a section of a multiple choice exam. They have to reason out the answer with their group and then come up with the reasons why the answer is the way it is. We will share the answers tomorrow.
ELA A 30--worked on a poem by Archibald Lampman titled "Heat." We did a bit of imagery and then they worked on some questions that allowed them to break down the poem with literary devices. Essentially, they were doing guided annotations.
Period 3--ELA B 30
We introduced the concept of the Canterbury Tales today. We are just looking at some background information and then we will get into the reading.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
The students were taking place in the PARTY program today about making safe decisions.
Period 6--AP 20
We were compiling information about The Crucible today. We will able to share in our double on Friday.

Period 1--AP 30
We did our timed write today for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. They are getting better at the 40 minute limit. The ELA A 30 students did this as well with some other help and get some extra time to finish.
Period 2 & 3--ELA B 30
I introduced the Boast today so the students were treated to a number of previous years' students boasts to show them that they can do it. We had a lot of fun on our trip down memory lane. The students had the remainder of that class to work on it as well as the second class in our double period. I look forward to these boasts that will be delivered in front of the class next Monday.
Period 4--ELA 20
They had this last class to work on their symbol assignment. This is due on Monday.
Period 5--AP 10
This is their last class to work on their I-Search paper. The paper is due on Monday.

Period 1 & 2--ELA 20
We reviewed "The Penny in the Dust" from before the break. We summarized the content of the short story as well as the idea of both symbols and irony. This led into some class discussion (as much as can be done on Monday after a 10 day break!). Then, the students were given some time to work on a representing assignment. This requires them to examine five different symbols that reflect who and what they are.
Period 3--AP 30
We needed to finish the discussion on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, so we did so. This took up the entire class as we were able to engage in some interesting discussions about existentialism and truth.
Period 4--ELA B 30
We read a more detailed excerpt from Beowulf. This allowed the students to see and locate examples of kennings, caesura, and alliteration. We defined these terms and some examples before applying it to the literature.
Period 5--AP 10
We took down 10 more literary devices for a quiz on Friday. As promised from before the break, the students will get this class as well as a class tomorrow to finish up their I-Search paper.
Period 6--AP 20
We took down 10 more literary devices for a quiz on Friday. They were given four subjects to research in preparation for our study on The Crucible.

April 14, 2014
Period 1--ELA 20
In preparation for our play that is next on our agenda, we spent this class discussing gender roles. With the title of "Switching Places," it's no surprise that roles will be reversed in this play. We should have fun when we start it tomorrow.
Period 2--AP 30/ELA A 30
The students had another timed write in AP today to finish off our Victorian Literature unit. We will be into modern literature tomorrow with some adbsurdist theatre in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
ELA A 30: They read an essay by Chief Dan George titled "I am a Native of North America"
Period 3--ELA B 30
We introduced the idea of heroes today with a power point that looks at the characteristics and we created some definitions. This is leading up to our study of Beowulf.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
Finally, we know who killed Mr. Chippendale in the poem by the same name. For the first period, the students played detective until we all reasoned it out. In the second period of the double, they were introduced to the I-Search Paper that will focus on one of the issues found in the poem. They have a lot of freedom to take this in any direction they like.
Period 6--AP 20
We finished out study of "Thou Blind Man's Mark" and in order to get ready for our study of The Crucible, they had some time to look up 10 interesting facts about the Salem Witch Trials.

Period 1 & 2--ELA 20
This was their penultimate class to work on their Hoodwinked assignment. In the second of the double, we did some creative writing where the students had to respond to the prompt: He turned the key in the lock, opened the door, and to his horror, he saw.... After they were done, the students could use the rest of the class to work on their assignment or the To Kill A Mockingbird essay that is due on the 14th.
Period 3--AP 30
We examined Victorian prose excerpts today. The students looked at one by Charles Dickens and then proceeded to teach me about what they found. We had a class discussion with them at the front of the room and me in the students' seats. It was fun for me to be the student!
Period 4--ELA B 30
The students spent this class working on their essay. They are well on their way to being able to accomplish this.

To assess, the students are allowed to choose any fairy tale with which they are familiar and write about it from a different character's point of view. We chose their fairy tales and then they had some time to start figuring out their plan of attack.
Period 2--AP 30/ELA A 30

Period 3--ELA B 30
We went over the handout on how to write formal essays.
Period 4--AP 10
We needed a few minutes to finish our viewing of "The Veldt" and then we had the students who needed to do a short speech deliver their opinions about who was responsible for the deaths of George and Lydia in the story. After this, we started our study of "Who Killed Mr. Chippendale" which is a bit of a break from AP literature, but fun nonetheless.
Period 5 & 6--AP 20
We looked at conceits and analyzed John Donne's poem "The Bait" and then the groups were assigned a sonnet for them to analyze. We had just enough time to get together to consider the meaning of the three sonnets. We will analyze further on Thursday.

We discussed anaphora as well as other literary effects in the poem. Finally, I showed them the poem with visuals attached to the poem that turned it in a graphic poem. Their assignment will be to write their own poem, using anaphora as well as graphics in a similar style to Redbird's.
Period 3--ELA A 30
We had a guest speaker today so this class will be made up on Monday.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
The students used the first class of the double to plan their debate and mock trial. The second class was used for the mock trial.
