WE MADE IT TO THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL BEFORE BREAK!
Period 1--History 10
This period was taken up by the pancake breakfast the SRC annually prepares for the school. Along with this being pajama day, it's a comfy day for all!
Period 2--ELA A 30
Since more than three quarters of the class wasn't in attendance, the remaining students used this as a class to work on assignments so they don't have any homework.
Period 3--AP 30
We went through the AP Bulletin for Students and Parents...the students should take this home and go over it with their parents.
Period 4--AP 10
The students have this last class to make sure they have no outstanding assignments!
Period 5--Mentor period
We had a Christmas assembly during this period.
Period 6--AP 20
We finished reading the play, Othello, and then discussed some of the finer points before finally getting ready to head out for the holiday!
I'd like to wish everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and all the best in the New Year! See you in 2014!
This is a blog designed to help students keep aware of what was done in class either as a reminder or as information if they were absent. Parents are also welcome to keep track of what is going on in our classroom!

December 16, 2013
It's the last week of school!
Period 1 & 2--AP 30
We finished our visual comparison of the "To be or not to be soliloquy" by annotating it as we viewed. After this, we carried on with our reading of the play and made it to, and passed, the climax of the play where Hamlet has the chance to kill Claudius but doesn't. We are in the middle of the Closet scene and will finish it up tomorrow.
Period 3--ELA A 30
The students and I continued reading through the non-fiction book of The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson and we are watching his lies unravelling as the Hutchinsons try to locate Polly.
Period 4--History 10
We finished watching the last segment of "The Rise and Fall of Oliver Cromwell." We stop periodically to discuss what they saw to ensure understanding and for them to take the notes down. After this, we had just enough time for a handout on Charles II and the Restoration. I also handed out an outline for their exam. We will go over it in more detail tomorrow.
Period 5--AP 10
Once again, the computer lab was our location to have the students continue to work on their multi-media assignment for a character sketch and comparison to real life from Animal Farm.
Period 6--AP 20
We continued reading Othello in class and events are moving quickly to the end of the tragedy.
Friday, 13 December 2013
December 13, 2013
Period 1--AP 30
We did our viewing activity today with being active viewers of the two versions of the "To be or not to be" scene. We annotated the Brannagh version first and looked at the difference it makes to the over tone in having Hamlet suspect that he is being spied upon. We will finish with Gibson's version on Monday.
Period 2 & 3--ELA A 30
We read to the end of the first part of the book in Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson. This last section covered the murder of Polly Wilson. After we finished the reading, we worked on our second reading log. In the second class, the students reminded me that I had told them of a video version of "The Painted Door" by Sinclair Ross that we read a few weeks ago. I recently found it and promised we would watch it, so we hauled out a VCR and played it for them. They enjoyed seeing how far video production has come in the last 30 years. To finish the class off, we continued reading.
Period 4--AP 10
Once again, we were in the computer lab to work on our Animal Farm assignments although I did allow them to use the class as a "clean up" class.
Period 5--History 10
We reviewed the parts of the video they watched yesterday and then carried on. We will need one more class to complete our viewing of Cromwell's reign.

December 12, 2013
Unfortunately, I was home with a sick kid today, but Mrs. Adelman was able to come in and cover for me today. This is what the day was like for her.
Period 1--History 10
To break from the students doing research with a PBL, they watched a documentary called "The Rise and Fall of Oliver Cromwell"and took notes from it. They were able to get through two and a half of the five videos. We will finish the other 2 up today.
Period 2--ELA A 30
The kids were treated to Mrs. Adelman reading to them today and we progressed through the book to page 74. We are almost finished part I and then the students can do their second reading log.
Period 3--AP 30
The students continued to read Hamlet and finished the "Nunnery" scene.
Period 4--AP 10
They were in the computer lab working on their Animal Farm character sketch and character comparisons.
Period 5--Mentor
The students had this period to work on their homework
Period 6--AP 20
They continued to read through Othello and finished Act III. We will pick it up from there tomorrow.

December 11, 2013
Period 1--AP 30
We continued with our reading by starting out with Act III and then immediately halted with the "To be or not to be" speech. At this point, I showed clips of the soliliquy from the Branaugh version as well as the Gibson version (for fun, we also watched Richard Burton perform the speech). The setting, context, and lighting are so different in the productions that it dramatically alters the tone. Tomorrow we will spend some time actively "annotating" these clips.
Period 2--ELA A 30
The students were given the first part of the class to work on their reading log from The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson. For the second half of the class, we read on to see what John was going to do now that Polly made it to Canada.
Period 3--History 10
This was their last class to work on their summative assessment (letters to the editor). We will carry on with our unit tomorrow.
Period 4--AP 10
We were in the computer lab to continue on with the character sketches in multi-media format.

December 10, 2013
Period 1--History 10
We continued with our History 10 PBL in the computer lab today. The students started working on their summative assignment which requires them to view the issue of Charles I's execution from both the royalist point of view as well as the parlimentarian point of view. They will have a bit of time to work on this tomorrow to finish up.
Period 2--ELA A 30
The students listened as I finished reading the first section of The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson. Once we completed this section, the students were let through their reading log assignments. We didn't get time to complete this, so they will have a bit of time tomorrow to do so.
Period 3--AP 30
The students finished up their first Timed Write for Hamlet.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
We went through the information for Animal Farm that I wanted them to understand including information about George Orwell, political satires, as well as a power point that takes them through the novel in more detail. In the second period of the day, the students chose the characters that they would like to research. They were also introduced to the multimedia project that they will do in conjunction with the novel. We spent the second period in the computer lab working on their assignment.
Period 6--AP 20
The students were given back their essays and told they can re-do them. A re-write due date of December 20th was given to them. After this, we continued with the reading of Othello.

Monday, 9 December 2013
December 9, 2013
Period 1--ELA A 30
We continued with our reading of The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson after reviewing what we learned last week. About half way through class, we stopped and did a character reflection of John/Jack Wilson by looking at his past, present, and future (where the students made predictions). They did well in discussion, seemed to follow along, and are beginning to become more interested in the novel.
Period 2--AP 30
We finished reading Act II of Hamlet after summarizing the events of the act thus far. At this point, we are taking a "break" of sorts and the students began writing a timed write on one of three topics. They are allowed various resources for this timed write that they won't be allowed next time.
Period 3 & 4--History 10
We were able to clean up a lot of things during this double period. The students had to:
1. Comment on two classmates' Bit Strips.
2. Go over the handout from Disclosure #4--I collated all the data from their post-its and gave it to them.
3. They continued their research into Disclosure #5 with the focus being on the English Civil War. I gave them various sub-headings they should explore including: Oliver Cromwell, the New Model Army, the cavaliers and the roundheads, the various battles, the results of the war, Charles I's fate, and the role religion played in all of this.
4. There is a Bit Strip I created that the students had to comment on.
5. For those that finished quickly, I gave them the summative assessment which has them create 4 letters to the editor in different voices about the events of the war.
Period 5--AP 10
To start the class, we had fun with the kids choosing what animal they are most like and why. We shared this together in the class with a lot of laughs! We got down to business with Animal Farm by looking at definitions of fables and allegories and the students are now starting to make connections between history and the novel. We also briefly went through the ideas of Marxism, communism, and the events of the Russian Revolution.

December 6, 2013
Well, due to our lovely weather today, with a bone-numbing -40 degree Celsius (-30 plus a nasty wind-chill) temperature, the buses weren't running today leaving most of our students tucked away at home in their nice warm beds. Those that did brave the cold joined the other one-third of our school population in the building and were treated to a day of getting caught up on all of their homework! Hopefully the cold snap breaks over the weekend!

Period 1--AP 30
We continued reading Act II today and will finish the act tomorrow.
Period 2 & 3--ELA A 30
With the double today, we began to read through The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson. I will be reading this aloud to get them going on it through the first section, but then they will have to continue the reading on their own.
Period 4--AP 10
The students continued to work diligently on their essays for Macbeth. They are making progress and many are finishing up their rough drafts.
Period 5--History 10
This was a fun class. I had the students set up Twittter accounts on the computers and had them tweet a response to the question: What was the Petition of Rights? We will use twitter, on occasion to respond to their research. They also finished up Bit Strips that they had and those that completed everything were researching their next disclosure.

Period 1--History 10
The students had computer time to finish up their James VI (I) and Charles I disclosure that would take them to the brink of the English Civil War. We will debrief tomorrow.
Period 2--AP 30
We continued with our reading in Hamlet of Act II. Things are getting interesting (not that I ever think things are boring with Shakespeare...)!
Period 3--ELA A 30
We are almost finished with all the speeches, but have just a couple yet to finish up. In the meantime, we cleaned up our study of the two Sinclair Ross short stories and are just starting in with our study of The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson.
Period 4--AP 10
Once again, the students made excellent use of their time working on their essay. Since they are working so well on it, I am willing to allow them time to continue for a bit longer which pushes our study of Animal Farm back a bit.
Period 5--Mentor Period
The grade 12s in my group were treated to a work period and they used it well.
Period 6--AP 20
The students are doing a timed write on Othello. Since this is their first of the year, they have a bit of time to work on it next class.

December 3, 2013
Once again, the students are back from a long weekend. Our day looked like this:
Period 1--AP 30
We spent a few minutes talking about some of the new rule changes at the school to ensure understanding about late assignments, coming to class late, and the Homework Support Centre. Once done, we dove back into Hamlet. Unfortunately, we didn't quite finish Act I but will get that done tomorrow.
Period 2--ELA A 30
We spent a few minutes talking about some of the new rule changes at the school to ensure understanding about late assignments, coming to class late, and the Homework Support Centre. After we went through all of this, we finished reading the "Lamp at Noon." We spoke about empathy at the end of the story and did a quick discussion to ensure clarity of the ending before the bell rang.
Period 3--History 10
We spent a few minutes talking about some of the new rule changes at the school to ensure understanding about late assignments, coming to class late, and the Homework Support Centre. We were in the computer lab with disclosure #4 for the remainder of the period. We will continue with it tomorrow.
Period 4--AP 10
The students are making some solid headway on their Macbeth essay. We will have more time to work on it tomorrow. They decided on December 16th as a due date and they will have most of the rest of this week to work on it.

Friday, 29 November 2013
November 29, 2013
Period 1--History 10
We finished discussing our notes from Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. We had some interesting ideas about "What if..." One of the ideas the kids came up with was: What if Elizabeth would have married the czar of Russia who was seeking her hand in marriage during her reign. This would have had huge implications if they would have had a child in regards to religion, the eventual Industrial Revolution, the economy of England, the autonomy of England, the power of Russia, etc. It was fun to play the "what if" game!
Period 2--ELA A 30
We had a few more speeches with just a few left to go. We will finish the rest up on Tuesday, hopefully. As well, we started reading "The Lamp at Noon" by Sinclair Ross. We didn't get as far as we would like because we started debating who had the better argument: Paul or Ellen. We will finish reading this on Tuesday.
Period 3--AP 30
Hamlet was our focus for the day. We started out the class by reviewing the first soliloquy of the play from yesterday. We carried on, but didn't quite finish up Act I.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
The students had this double period to work on their first formal essay. We were able to focus on getting the thesis statement finished for most of the students and set off in the right direction to get to work on their essay.
Period 6--AP 20
We are taking a short break from Othello as the students use this class to finish up some of their outstanding assignments. Half the class was missing for various reasons, so it was a good time to play "catch up."

Period 1--ELA A 30
We continued with our speeches today. The students are delivering speeches on the "Most Admirable Canadian of All Time." We will have to finish the rest tomorrow.
Period 2--AP 30
We are slowly moving toward the second act of the Hamlet. The students have now been introduced to Hamlet and his misery of losing a father, having his mother "stained," and being overlooked for the throne. We will continue reading of the fallout from this as we move into the second act.
Period 3 & 4--History 10
In the first period of the double, the students worked in the computer lab to continue their research on Elizabeth I. In the second double, the students filled out a sticky note from Edward VI and Mary I with: 1. The most important piece of information they found about Edward and Mary. 2. Something that surprised them from their research, and a question that they may have. They also filled out a formative quiz on Elizabeth I. We will continue with our study of her tomorrow.

Period 5--AP 10
The students had this class to work on their Macbeth essay.

November 27, 2013
Period 1 & 2--AP 30
We finished our trip down memory lane to grade 10 History as we reviewed the religious turmoil in England during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, Elizabeth I, and James I. This is pivotal to understanding the harmartia of Hamlet as we read through the play. We started reading Act I and finished scene 1...Hamlet was about to speak for the first time when the final bell rang.
Period 3--ELA A 30
We did a multiple intelligence survey for the first few minutes of class. We then reviewed the qualities of a good speaker and the students began their speeches.
Period 4--History 10
We were missing a number of the students for Driver Training, but continued on nonetheless with disclosure #3 which has them research Elizabeth I.
Period 5--AP 10
The students were given this class to work on their Macbeth essays. They will have the rest of this week to do so.
Period 6--AP 20
We continued our reading of Othello. The students will work on their Blake poems on Friday since half the class will be missing, and next Tuesday they will have a timed write on the events of the first two acts of the play.

November 26, 2013
I was away at appointments for the day, but Mr. Genereux led the class for the day. This is what it should have looked like:
Period 1—AP 30
These kids
have lots of work they can be doing but I did forget to tell them to bring
it. They all have annotations they can
be working on, Chaucer assignments that may not be done, essays that need
finishing up, or a book they can be reading (either Night for the non-AP students or The Awakening for the AP students.
Period 2 & 3—ELA A 30
They can
begin watching the documentary Over
Canada. Before the video,
the students should do the pre-viewing questions on the handout and discuss. This video is about 72 minutes long. As they watch,
they need to jot down five places they see on the video and explain why, as
well they should pay attention to the soundtrack. Once the documentary finishes, there are a
few questions after it that they should do. If they finish early, they should be reading The Secret Lives of Sgt. John
Wilson!
Period 4—AP 10
They were given their essay
topics yesterday, so they should get started today with their topics. If they have questions, they should write
them down to remember to ask me tomorrow, but they can ask some of their peers
too. They should use their “AP
Resource Booklet” which should help.
Period 5—History 10
We don’t
have access to the computer lab this class.
I’ve warned the kids to bring their cells to use as hot spots since we
don’t need the network. They can finish
their Bit Strip but they shouldn’t spend too much time on it (really, not more
than half the class). They should be
started onto Disclosure #3 which will take the rest of this class and next
class to research. Handout the Disclosure
#3 sheet for them to get started on.
Monday, 25 November 2013
November 25, 2013
Period 1--History 10
We didn't have access to the computer lab but were able to hobble together enough computer power to start our formative assessment for disclosure #2. They will get a bit more time to work on this tomorrow and then move onto to Disclosure #3.
Period 2--ELA A 30
We finished reading the short story "The Painted Door" and the students had some questions to do with it. We started taking the questions up together and will finish next class. The students are reminded to have their speeches ready to go.
Period 3--AP 30
We started in with the background for Hamlet. It takes us back a bit to grade 10 History with the English monarchs before Elizabeth and the struggles with religion. We tend to read Hamlet through a neo-historical lense requiring us to examine the impact of the religious turmoil on Shakespeare and how it plays out throughout Hamlet. We didn't quite finish this, so we will pick it up again next class.
Period 4--AP 10
I gave the students back their timed writes from awhile ago. We went over their "writing sins" as a class as well as some of the great things about their writing. Then, they were given their prompts for their big essay and we started going through them. They will have class time to work on this assignment.
Period 5--Mentor
We did a drill for Lockdown procedures. Then we did some team building activities.
Period 6--AP 20
We continued to read Othello and are almost finished Act II.

Friday, 22 November 2013
November 22, 2013
Period 1--AP 30
The students were given this time to work on their persuasive essay. They are trying to clean up various assignments.
Period 2--ELA A 30
We almost finished Sinclair Ross's "The Painted Door." We stopped part way through to look at the language used by Ross to create imagery. This included a discussion on sibilance and alliteration. We will have to complete this on Monday.
Period 3--History 10
The computer lab was in our home for the period as the students continued their research on Edward IV and Mary I of England and their struggles with religion. They were given their formative assessment assignment which requires them to use Bit Strips to summarize their research. Our class is having a lot of fun with Bit Strips.
Period 4--AP 10
We continued with some practice with reading passages and doing multiple choice questions based on those passages. We spend considerable time correcting them and will move onto some discussion questions on Monday.
Thursday, 21 November 2013
November 21, 2013
Period 1--History 10
The students started their second disclosure for their Problem-Based Learning unit on the Glorious Revolution. They spent considerable time researching information on Edward VI of England as well as Mary I of England. They will get more time tomorrow to complete their research and then work on their formative assessment.
Period 2--ELA A 30
In shifting to the second unit, the students are examining the landscapes of Canada. As such, we are reading a short story called "The Painted Door" by Sinclair Ross. We are reading it aloud in class and discussing as we go, so we didn't quite finish.
Period 3--AP 30
With a new assignment given out yesterday, they have some time to work on their persuasive essay.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
We finished the power point on Macbeth, and spent considerable time discussing fate/free will, and who was responsible for Macbeth's downfall. With this, we went into the discussion of the Weird Sisters and their role in Macbeth's fate. It made for some interesting conversation. To finish the double period off, we did some multiple choice questions based on some passages from the play.
Period 6--AP 20
We finished Act I of Othello and are enjoying seeing Iago's character emerge. We discussed how to read various scenes or characters. For example, is Cassio a besotted fool, or is he a self-confident ladies' man flirting with his boss's wife? We are nicely into Act II and will continue our reading next class.

Period 1--ELA A 30
The students used this class in the computer lab to work on their Nomination Speeches. This is their last class and they will be required to do their speeches next Tuesday.
Period 2--AP 30
The students finished watching the rest of "The Wife of Bath's Tale" and then we discussed theme with focus and insight. We also spent a bit of time thinking about catharsis and whether or not it was achieved.
Period 3 & 4--History 10
While half the class was at Driver Training Education, the half left behind worked on their avatars and introductory activity for BitStrips. Our class is almost complete and the students should be able to work their way through the program well enough to attend to their next formative assignment.
Period 5--AP 10
Again, half the class was missing, so rather than move too far ahead, we took this opportunity to read Animal Farm in class. This book must be finished by the beginning of December.

Tuesday, 19 November 2013
November 19, 2013
Period 1 & 2--AP 30
We finished viewing "Knight's Tale" and applied the viewing to a technical study of the clip. We also answered questions about theme and focussed a lot on chivalry and how Chaucer viewed courtly love and if we could sense that tone throughout the piece. We discussed all of this and more, then moved into watching a version of "The Nun's Priest's Tale" with a brief examination of tone, and didn't quite have time to study "The Wife of Bath's Tale" before the bell rang.
Period 3--ELA A 30
The students had this last class to finish up their Reading Assessment. If they didn't finish, they were to take it home to complete.
Period 4--History 10
We didn't have access to the computer lab today, so we went over the information the students shared (as part of their formative assessment) on the back wall. It was a fun discussion going through what they learned about Henry VIII and religion.
Period 5--AP 10
Since they finished Macbeth on Friday with Mrs. Adelman, we reviewed some of the main ideas such as: is Lady Macbeth a victim of love or an ambitious woman? Who were the nemeses in the play? We examined how each nemesis to Macbeth functioned in the play.
Period 6--AP 20
We reviewed our reading from last Thursday and then moved into a continuation of reading Act I. We are starting to see the emerging character of Iago.

November 15, 2013
I'm not here today, but this is what the day should look like.
Period 1—AP 30
They want some
class time to work on their annotations, so this is what they will be working on today.
Period 2—ELA A 30
They have
their “Most Admirable Person of All Time” assignment and they are booked into
the North Computer lab. They only have
one more class after this to work on it before they start presenting their speeches. The speeches have to be 2.5 minutes long, so
what they say needs to be fairly substantial
Period 3—ELA A30
For the
second part of the double, yesterday, we started in on a Reading Assessment
that they can continue with. I'm not sure if they will finish this or not, but they can continue and push to be done.
Period 4—AP 10
We are on Act V, scene v of Macbeth…the “tomorrow, and
tomorrow, and tomorrow” speech to be exact. If you get finished before the end of class, I trust that there are lots
of things about the play Mrs. Adelman would like to share with the kids.
Period 5—History 10
We started a PBL I made up yesterday on the English Civil War and
Glorious Revolution. They are just doing
some research on Henry the VIII, his wives, and the role of religion in
England. They have about 15-20 minutes
to finish their research. Once they have
done that, they have the formative assessment sheet and a sticky note where they will answer a question that sums up some of their research. They’ll have to come back to the room to post
their sticky notes on the back wall.
For the remainder of the period, the
students will create a Bitstrips avatar and do the Introduce Yourself activity for our Bitstrips class. We will be using Bitstrips to do some of our formative assessment after our disclosures.
November 14, 2013
Period 1--History 10
I introduced the PBL that the students will be doing for the next little while with this unit. We did a brainstorming of positives and negatives of religion being involved with government. From there, they went to the computer lab to deal with their first disclosure that asks them to examine Henry VIII's reign and the role religion played in it.
Period 2--ELA A 30
The students had to do a reading assessment today. We just started this and it will take several days to complete.
Period 3--AP 30
We read the "Pardoner's Tale" today and then started a viewing activity with the "Knight's Tale" which will take more time to complete.
Period 4--AP 10
In Macbeth, we are on Act V and are about halfway through. They may be able to finish up tomorrow.
Period 5--Mentor
The students continued to get their portfolios ready for three way conferences next week.
Period 6--AP 20
We stared with Othello today. The students were given a character map as well as some important information to help them get through some of the events. We began reading and are nicely into Act I.
Wednesday, 13 November 2013
November 13, 2013
Period 1--AP 30
During this class, we were able to finish reading "The Miller's Tale" as well as look at some important notes about characterization, motives, and feminist views. We will continue with the "Pardoner's Tale" tomorrow.
Period 2--ELA A 30
Due to the fact that this class has so many outstanding assignments, we used this class as a "clean up" for them to try and get some of their work completed and handed in.
Period 3--History 10
The students listened as I finished the overview of the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution. We will start studying this via a Project Based Learning starting tomorrow, so students will be doing some research.
Period 4--AP 10
We finished off Act IV and just nicely moved into Act V before the bell rang. We may finish up the play tomorrow.

Period 1--History 10
We started off our new unit today on the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution. Today was just an overview of the events they will be studying but we didn't quite finish, so we'll have to do so tomorrow.
Period 2--ELA A 30
We wanted to work on our speeches, but couldn't get into the laptop and the mobile lab of laptops wasn't cooperating either. Thus, we switched directions, started our next unit on Landscapes, and looked at visual representations of the landscapes in Canada. The students had to fill out a sheet on a visual of their choice and analyze it.
Period 3--AP 30
We began our reading of "The Miller's Tale" today. Before reading, we examined the concept of "fabliau" stories and briefly how this tale fits into that genre. We will have to finish tomorrow as we didn't quite get through it today.
Period 4 & 5-AP 10
Macbeth was our game plan for the double period and it was fortunate that everyone was here because we got through a lot. We reviewed a bit of the beginning of Act III and then finished it up and are on the last scene of Act IV. At this pace, we should finish the play by the end of the week or early next week.
Period 6--AP 20
The tough scheduling of this class is making us all feel disjointed so we took this time to review assignments that are outstanding as well as what is on their plate right now. Once we took inventory of everything, the kids were given a work period to sort it out before we dive into Othello on Thursday.

Period 1--AP 30
Many of the students were helping out the grade 11s with getting ready for the Remembrance Day Service. Since we were missing so many, we continued with our Chaucer Prologue assignment.
Period 2--ELA A 30
We went to the computer lab to work on our "Most Admirable Canadian of All Time" speech. It must be 2.5 minutes long. The students should have chosen their person and started collecting information in order to start writing their speech.
Period 3--History 10
We were called down to the gym to take part in the OHS Remembrance Day Service.
Period 4--History 10
Since more than half the class was gone, we used this time to get caught up on work that is outstanding.
Period 5--AP 10
With it being such a nice day before winter truly hits, and with many of the class gone for Drivers Education, we went out to appreciate the nice day, wrote a poem along the way, and did a quick stop by the bakery. When we returned to school, we recited our class poem to the principal and then used the rest of the class to clean up homework.
As a reminder, there is no school for students tomorrow since it is a teacher inservice for the entire day.

With report cards coming up, marking was piling up, so I took an EDO to spend the day marking at home. This is what the day looked like for Mrs. Adelman:
Period 1 & 2--AP 30
They were promised one more class to work on their Chaucer Prologue assignments, so they have it today. They can use the other period in our double to work on their annotations (due before Christmas) or other assignments needing their immediate attention.
Period 3--ELA A 30
The students will read the essay "I am a Native of North America" by Chief Dan George. There are various pre, during, and post reading activities for them to do.
Period 4--History 10
The students will do some current events with Mrs. Adelman
Period 5--AP 10
The students are starting Act III of Macbeth. They take turn reading parts and discussing meaning as we go along.

Period 1--AP 30
We finished the last of our boasts and the grade 12s did an excellent job! They had the rest of the class to work on their Chaucer Prologue assignment. They have one more class tomorrow to work on this.
Period 2 & 3--ELA A 30
We took a new poem today called "On Both Sides of the Invisible Border" which deals with cultural clashes and how one must "dance" between the two cultures. We worked together, as a class, understanding the poem and answering questions about imagery and tone. I also introduced the next big assignment which will have the students prepare and present a speech (2 and half minutes long) on "The Most Admirable Canadian of All Time." They will start this assignment on Thursday.
Period 4--AP 10
The students spent the class working on their first timed write for Macbeth. If they didn't finish up, they will have to do so for homework.
Period 5--History 10
The students wrote their History exam on the Industrial Revolution for Mr. Wills today. We will do some current events tomorrow and then tackle our new unit on Thursday.

Period 1--AP 30
The students performed their boasts today and they were excellent. There are still a few that need to complete them tomorrow. The remainder of the period was used to work on their Chaucer Prologue assignment.
Period 2--ELA A 30
Since we finished reading the short story "On a Cold Day" last week, we started this week off with some questions to remind us of the events of the story and then time to work on the assignment that goes with it that will be due on Wednesday.
Period 3--History 10
The students were given a choice as to whether or not they wanted to do an activity to help them study or just have independent study time. They chose independent study time.
Period 4--AP 10
We finished going over the excerpt from Act II (dagger scene) together and developed a thesis. The students are doing their first timed write with this excerpt.

The grades 6,9, and 10s took part in a gym blast this afternoon as part of our Spirit Week!
The AP 20s had class in period 6 and finished off the week with their reading to the Kindergarten class. They had a lot of fun hanging out with 5 year olds for the period!

HAPPY HALLOWE'EN!!
Period 1--History 10
Mr. Wills took the students through a lecture on Factory life. They listened and filled out a sheet with the missing information from his lecture. They have a exam on Tuesday.
Period 2--ELA A 30
We finished reading "On a Cold Day" and summarized the story to ensure that they understood. We are going to start the assignment on Monday since we miss tomorrow's class for a Gym Blast.
Period 3--AP 30
We finally finished going through the characters from the Prologue. The AP students will be doing a "character assassination" as well as providing a visual of their own devising. The B 30 kids will be choosing from various options as to what Prologue assignment they will do.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
We finished going over the speech from Act I and looked at an example of a timed write. We spend considerable time looking at how the thesis statement connects everything in the paper and how thesis, topic, and concluding statements all need to be connected. They were given a new excerpt from the play and we will start that together and then they will write their timed write based on that.
Period 6--AP 20
They went and read to the Kindergarten kids and then spent some time planning their own companion poems.

Period 1--ELA A 30
The students were assigned The Secret Lives of Sgt. John--we don't have enough, so we have to read it in two stages. I also handed back various assignments, and reminded the students that their editorial on the Canadian Identity that required them to interview 3 people is due on Tuesday of next week. From there, we moved into the lesson for the day. We discussed Canada's nature as a country of immigrants by looking at our own ethnic backgrounds. Through this, the concept of assimilation was front and centre where we looked at the good and bad aspects of it (and connected it back to our study of April Raintree). We started reading the short story "On a Cold Day" about immigrant women's experiences (coming from Calcutta and the Middle East). We didn't get through the story quite yet, but should tomorrow.
Period 2--AP 30
We continued on with the characters from "the Prologue" and will finish up with them tomorrow.
Period 3 & 4--History 10
In period 3, the students had fun with Mr. Wills as he took them through a simulation of the assembly line. In period 4, they debriefed their simulation and then moved onto some transportation advancements with some excellent clips of early airplanes, the assembly line, interchangeable parts, etc. It was a good lesson!
Period 5--AP 10
We are examining Lady Macbeth's soliloquy to get the students ready to write a timed write. We analyzed the passage together and will look at a sample essay tomorrow.

October 29, 2013
Period 1 & 2--AP 30
We continued with our discussion of the characters in the Prologue. We should be able to finish this up tomorrow.
Period 3--ELA A 30
This class was needed to finish up our discussion of the double entry journal from yesterday. We lost the first fifteen minutes of class or so with Mr. Sobkowicz needing to talk to the students about driving issues, lates, and cell phones, so we had to play catch up. We just finished our discussion as the bell rang.
Period 4--History 10
Mr. Wills took the students through the concept of infrastructure.
Period 5--AP 10
We finished reading Act II and then briefly summarized the events of the Act. Finally, the students were given a speech (of Lady Macbeth's from Act I) and we are going to continue our work on how to analyze poetry using this speech. We will develop a thesis statement from it and they will write their first timed write from this piece.
Period 6--AP 20
William Blake continued to be our focus topic for the period. We finished our analysis of the "Holy Thursday" poems. Their companion poem assignment was introduced; this requires the students to create their own poems (in partners) about a social issue and using many of Blake's techniques (irony, structure, tone, etc.). While they are working on their poems, half of them will be off reading to the Kindergarten kids as part of their speaking strand assessment. They are looking forward to mixing up with the little kids!

Period 1--AP 30
The students finished up their group work for summarizing each of the characters in the "Prologue" and then they shared their information on the board rather like a giant jigsaw. We aren't even close to finished sharing, so this will likely take a couple of days.
Period 2 & 3--ELA A 30
A listening activity was our main menu for period 2. The students listened to a CBC radio interview of Al Purdy and had to fill out a listening activity. This was for hand-in. After this, they were given a copy of Purdy's poem, "Homo Canadensis" where they had to complete a double entry journal for it. We didn't quite finish going over this together as a class, so we will do so tomorrow.
Period 4--AP 10
We continued reading Macbeth in Act II today and have just murdered off Duncan. We will deal with the fall out tomorrow!
Period 5--History 10
Mr. Wills took the students through the smelting process and transportation. They had an exit slip to complete part way through class but didn't finish the second part of the lesson so that will be on tomorrow's agenda.

Period 1--AP 30
We finished with our discussion of the background of England in the Middle Ages as it relates to Chaucer, the Father of English. We just barely were able to start reading the Prologue (in Middle English) before the bell rang.
Period 2--ELA A 30
As a class, we went over the assignment that is an editorial based on the essay "The Canadian Personality." They were off to a good start, got distracted along the way, and then were able to focus for the rest of the class enough that we may work on it again tomorrow for a time.
Period 3--History 10
Mr. Wills had the grade 10s in the computer lab for one last class to work on their research assignment on an Industrial Revolution inventor.
Period 4--AP 10
Because we are missing well more than half the class to driver training, I had pity on them and allowed them a work period.

Period 1--History 10
Mr. Wills gave the kids more time to work on their research assignment on an inventor from the Industrial Revolution. They will get tomorrow as well.
Period 2--ELA A 30
We finished reading the essay "Canadian Personality" today as well as a few side articles to support some of the statements made in the article. We will go through their assignment for this class tomorrow.
Period 3--AP 30
The students had a bit of time to start their Beowulf Boast today and then we moved onto the introduction of the Canterbury Tales. To get us in the right frame of mind, we pretended to be on a road trip with 29 strangers and no technology for two weeks. I asked them what kind of people might they find on their trip and we brainstormed a list together. At this point, we started in on some of the technical features of the story and background to it.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
We reviewed for the kids who were missing yesterday for driver training. We continued reading the rest of the act. The students were suitable "creeped out" by Lady Macbeth and her determination to see her husband become king! Along the way, we did a character study of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Banquo, the Witches, and Duncan. The students' job for next class will be to create a character sketch.
Period 6--AP 20
After taking a break from it, we were back into William Blake's poetry. We completed our study of "The Tyger" and will get into "The Lamb" on Friday.

Period 1--ELA A 30
We began reading an essay about the Canadian personality (if there is such a thing) and argued about it for a bit. We didn't finish the essay, but will do so tomorrow and there will be an assignment that accompanies it.
Period 2--AP 30
The students finished reading the graphic novel of Beowulf if they weren't quite finished. After this, they were given their assignment which is to create a boast using kennings, alliteration, and caesura. I read them samples from previous years to give them an idea. They will have to perform their boasts in front of their peers!
Period 3 & 4--History 10
Mr. Wills introduced their research assignment and we spent the two classes in the computer lab researching their inventor. There are a number of criteria they have to reach throughout their research paper. They will get more time to work on this tomorrow.
Period 5--AP 10
We continued on with Macbeth. Before we did move on, a few were expressing uncertainty about the first few scenes, so we did a quick review of the events of the play so far and summarized them together on the board. We were able to get a bit more reading in, but will be able to move faster tomorrow.

I was away at an Advanced Placement Meeting all day, but this is what the day should have looked like:
Period 1 & 2--AP 30
They worked on their annotations for the first class of the double period and then they read Beowulf (an excerpt) in the second. They were looking for kennings, alliteration, and caesura as they read. As a treat, I allowed them to read the graphic novel too, which they really enjoyed!
Period 3--ELA A 30
The students finished reading the poem "Canada: A Case History" with Mrs. Adelman. They answered the questions and went over them together in class.
Period 4--History 10
Mr. Wills was in charge and went over information on the textile industry during the Industrial Revolution.
Period 5--AP 10
Mrs. Adelman was thrilled to teach Macbeth! She recited the first scene for the kids, did some review and then continued reading. They also did a cloze activity of the soldier's speech to familiarize themselves with the language.
Period 6--AP 20
They students had this last class to work on their To Kill A Mockingbird essay in class.

Period 1--AP 30
During this class, the students were introduced to the History of the English language through examples of Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. From there we examined a handout with information on the evolution and influences of the English language. It did end up taking much of the class, but in the end, we're working our way to Beowulf!
Period 2 & 3--ELA A 30
This class saw us finishing up our discussion on political correctness, but we also looked at defining the idea of Canadian humour. The students had to write a free verse poem of 10 lines that defined what it means to them to be Canadian. In the second class of our double period, we began looking at the idea of metaphors; to help us along, we viewed the "Ogres are like onions" scene from Shrek as an example of a simile. The students had to create similes about Canada. We read the poem "Canada: A Case History" by Earle Birney and looked for similes and metaphors. We were just paraphrasing the poem when the bell rang to end the class.
Period 4--AP 10
We started reading Macbeth but didn't quite finish reading all of Act I. We will continue this on Monday.
Period 5--History 10
Mr. Wills took the students through a presentation on the Agricultural Revolution. They had a question at the end of the class to answer and hand in for him.

Period 1--History 10
Mr. Wills was back to teach the class today with the focus being on Standard of living. He was able to complete his presentation and had the students do an activity that asked them to choose the 10 most important things they would want on an island if they crashed, in order to maintain their standard of living. We didn't quite finish, so we will do so tomorrow.
Period 2--ELA A 30
The class had an enthusiastic discussion about political correctness and the national anthem. This then transitioned into the idea of Canadian humour. We will revisit the topic tomorrow.
Period 3--AP 30
The students requested one more class to complete their comparative timed write on two different speeches from Oedipus Rex. They were given this time to complete the essay.
Period 4--AP 10
We are still working on some of the background information for Macbeth. This meant that we needed to understand the concept of plot development. As such, there were some board notes for the students to take down. We spent the last few minutes looking at "prophecies" by examining the students' horoscopes for the day. This lead to a discussion about self-fulfilling prophecies and the argument between fate and free will.
Period 5--Mentor period
The students were given this class to collect exemplars of their work from each of their class and begin working on their comment sheets.
Period 6--AP 20
This is their second last class to work on their To Kill a Mockingbird essay. They should be using this time to have me check thesis statements and begin organizing their ideas.

Period 1--AP 30
The students are doing a timed write on Oedipus Rex to tie up our study of the play. This is a more challenging timed write that requires the students to compare two passages regarding tone and literary devices, so I will allow them some extra time to finish it up tomorrow.
Period 2--ELA A 30
The students started a bit of a study on the national anthem which turned into a History 30 lesson (Canadian History) about settlement, conquest, and compromise. We looked at the reason why the Official French Canadian anthem has such different words as well as the connection between the US National Anthem and Canada. Tomorrow we will look at the concept of political correctness.
Period 3--History 10
I was a substitute teacher in my own class today with Mr. Wills gone to a meeting. We started learning more about standard of living, and while I followed my sub plan, we didn't get very far because I kept adding information!
Period 4--AP 10
Before we get whole-heartedly into Macbeth, I interrupted the class to do a quick study on literary devices that will come in handy when they are starting in on some timed writes for the play. We studied 10 words using a kinesthetic method, and then 10 more with a visual method. It will be interesting to see which one works best for the students!

Period 1--History 10
Mr. Wills, an intern at our school, began his unit on the Industrial Revolution. We went through an overview of the major events of the time period as well as some of the important ideas that the students will be studying. The students were given a "fill in the blanks" from his presentation that they will finish up in tomorrow's class.
Period 2--ELA A 30
The students finished off their study of April Raintree by doing one more response...this time the response was to my questions asked based on their original submission. They had to write a paragraph addressing some of the topics I brought up and whether or not they agree or disagree with my comments. This was to be finished for the end of the class.
Period 3--AP 30
The students reviewed Oedipus Rex by writing a question paragraph based on the play. We came up with questions together as a class and then the kids were to work on their own to create the paragraph.
Period 4 & 5--AP 10
We are starting in on the background information of Macbeth. We went through the "Curse of the Scottish Play" as well as background information on Shakespeare and Elizabethan England. With any luck, we should be able to finish up and start in on the play tomorrow.
Period 6--AP 20
With the prompts finally finished, the grade 11s settled in to start planning their essay on To Kill a Mockingbird. They will get some time in class to work on this but with our class only being every other day, we do have to move on or it will feel like we're standing still!
