Period 1--ELA A 30
We continued with our reading of The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson after reviewing what we learned last week. About half way through class, we stopped and did a character reflection of John/Jack Wilson by looking at his past, present, and future (where the students made predictions). They did well in discussion, seemed to follow along, and are beginning to become more interested in the novel.
Period 2--AP 30
We finished reading Act II of Hamlet after summarizing the events of the act thus far. At this point, we are taking a "break" of sorts and the students began writing a timed write on one of three topics. They are allowed various resources for this timed write that they won't be allowed next time.
Period 3 & 4--History 10
We were able to clean up a lot of things during this double period. The students had to:
1. Comment on two classmates' Bit Strips.
2. Go over the handout from Disclosure #4--I collated all the data from their post-its and gave it to them.
3. They continued their research into Disclosure #5 with the focus being on the English Civil War. I gave them various sub-headings they should explore including: Oliver Cromwell, the New Model Army, the cavaliers and the roundheads, the various battles, the results of the war, Charles I's fate, and the role religion played in all of this.
4. There is a Bit Strip I created that the students had to comment on.
5. For those that finished quickly, I gave them the summative assessment which has them create 4 letters to the editor in different voices about the events of the war.
Period 5--AP 10
To start the class, we had fun with the kids choosing what animal they are most like and why. We shared this together in the class with a lot of laughs! We got down to business with Animal Farm by looking at definitions of fables and allegories and the students are now starting to make connections between history and the novel. We also briefly went through the ideas of Marxism, communism, and the events of the Russian Revolution.
