Period 1—ELA A 30AP 30
Both sections of this class are working on assignments. The AP kids are working on an essay for Lord of the Flies. This is their “monster essay” of 8-10 pages with secondary sources The ELA A 30 kids are working on a reading journal from The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson.
Period 2—Pre-AP 20
They’ve been given their assignment for Life of Pi. They are creating an ABC booklet.
Period 3—ELA A 30
We’re into Canadian landscapes at the moment.
As a motivational set, Mrs. Adelman asked the students what kind of things would HAVE to be included if they were to write a poem about the Canadian Landscape. Why would they make these choices? Then, they read the poem, “The Lonely Land” by AJM Smith and discussed what the poem means. The students have recently analyzed poems using a TPCASTT model: T= assess the title, make predictions, etc.
P= paraphrase the poem
C=connotation—look at implied meanings of the poem that you might see through literary devices such as alliteration, imagery, comparisons, etc.
A= attitude or tone that seems to be prevalent in the poem
S=Shifts in tone—where and why
T=look at the title again—were you right in your predictions? How has the content of the poem changed the meaning of the title?
T=theme—what is it? In order to find theme, FOCUS + INSIGHT = THEME
Period 4—Pre-AP 10
They are doing the ABC assignment, so this is time for them to work on it.
