Grade 12 ELA--we went to the Duck Lake Interpretive Centre and the Saskatchewan Penitentiary today as part of experiential learning for History 30.

Grades 10 and 20 in the Pre-AP levels were both working on the same assignment (for different novels, of course).  They had time in the computer lab to continue with their ABC books for their respective novels.

May 29, 2012

Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30
We spent the class discussing the questions from "Medicine River."   We looked at characterization, structure of the play and important symbols.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We are getting ready to work on our reading strand by reading to the Kindergarten class.  I did a sample reading for them of one of Robert Munsch's books.  Then the kids had a chance to go to the library and choose their own book.  The rest of the class was devoted to them practicing their reading.  They need to focus on engaging their audience and varying their volume, tone and cadence.  The Kindergarten kids are looking forward to having the "big kids" come to read to them!

Period 3--ELA A 30
The kids worked very well on their Over Canada assignments.  Since they worked so well, but aren't quite done yet, I'll allow them one more class period to work on this.

Peirod 4--Pre-AP 10
We finished watching Reel Injun and the making of the Indian stereotype via Hollywood.  We will start the assignment when I am back on Thursday.

The grade 12s will be going on our field trip to the Duck Lake Interpretive Centre and the Saskatchewan Penitentiary tomorrow.

May 28, 2012

Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30
We spent a bit of time going over our field trip expectations for Wednesday when we visit the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.  From there, the students had some time to work on their questions from "Medicine River."

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
The students had a timed write to do today on a Life of Pi.  Other than them finishing their assignment, this will conclude our study on the novel.

Period 3--ELA A 30
The students continued to work on their assignment for Over Canada.  They will have one last class, tomorrow, to work on this.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
We started a study on a documentary for Reel Injun.  We did some pre-viewing work with understanding stereotypes and how they function in society.  We also did a bit of the history of the First Nations and European conflict in Canada.  The students are expected to take a few notes as we move through the movie.  We were about half way through the movie when the bell rang, so we'll finish it tomorrow.

May 25, 2012

Period 1--ELA A 30/AP 30
The students requested this as a work period for their essays and reading logs.  They didn't get many work periods throughout the months leading up to the exam, so I'm being generous now!

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
This is their last class to work on this assignment.  A few are nearing completion, but the rest will need to do some work at home.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We continued with the assignment from the viewing of Over Canada.  We were able to book the netbooks for them to do some research about some of the locations they viewed on the film, so it was a quiet and productive class!  We will finish this up on Monday and Tuesday and then we are into The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
I handed out copies of The Hunger Games for them to read by mid-June.  Many have already read it, so this should be an easy one to go through.  This was their last class to work on their ABCs before we move on, so they were busy trying to get as much done as possible.

May 24, 2012

Period 1--ELA A 30/Pre-AP 30
We finished reading the "Medicine River" radio play and discussed some of the symbols.  They have a handout with some questions that they were given time to work on. We'll take those up when finished.  In general, it was a good play and the kids enjoyed it.  We did do some other discussion around stereotypes as well as characterization of Will, Harlen and Louise.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We had time to work on their ABC booklets.  They are coming along nicely.  The students are realizing this is a much bigger project than they first thought.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We spent this period prepping for our field trip next Wednesday to the Duck Lake interprative Centre and the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.  The kids are excited to go but there are some restrictions on their behavriour we needed to discuss.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
They had time to work on their ABCs for Fahrenheit 451.

Wednesday, 23 May 2012

May 23, 2012

I was away at an AP Council meeting today, so the students were able to have Mrs. Adleman in for me, which is always a treat for them!

Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30
We continued reading the radio play "Medicine River."  The class didn't quite finish, so we'll finish it up tomorrow.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
The continued to use this time to work on their ABC book.

Period 3--ELA A 30
The students finished watching the video of Over Canada which views various Canadian landscapes.  Tomorrow, they will have time to work on the assignment that accompanies the video.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
These kids also continued to work on their ABC book.

Tuesday, 22 May 2012

May 22, 2012

Period 1--ELA A 30/AP 30We spent the first part of the period discussing what it means to be a Canadian to us, what others view to be Canadian (stereotypes) and whether or not there is any truth in those stereotypes.  We also spoke about the diverse Canadian voices in our country and previewed a few of the voices we will be looking at as we read the play.  We started reading "Medicine River" (a radio play based on the novel by the same name).  We will continue tomorrow.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We had an assembly during this class so the students missed out on their opportunity to work on their ABC booklet.  We'll get some time for this tomorrow.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We started viewing the visual docuementary of Over Canada which looks at the various landscapes of Canada .  We didn't quite finish it, so we'll do so tomorrow.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
We had time today to work on their ABC assignment.

Thursday, 17 May 2012

May 17, 2012

Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30
This is their last class to work on their essays and reading journals.  For the AP kids, this essay won't be due until June 15th.  The ELA A 30s will likley have a similar due date for this big assignment.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We finished discussing Life of Pi via a power point I made up.  Again, we had some interesting questions about turth and story telling.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We reviewed the poem from yesterday with Mrs. Adelman.  We re-read "The Lonely Land" and took up the questions about the poem together as a class.  We also examined the concept of loneliness and isolation in Canada.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
The kids are working on their ABCs for Fahrenheit 451.

Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow for students due to the teachers' PD day.  The students get a 4-day weekend due to Victoria Day on Monday!  Enjoy the nice weather!

May 16, 2012

I was away at the Track and Field Sectionals meet on Wednesday, but this is what happened throughout the day.

Period 1—ELA A 30AP 30
Both sections of this class are working on assignments.  The AP kids are working on an essay for Lord of the Flies.  This is their “monster essay” of 8-10 pages with secondary sources  The ELA A 30 kids are working on a reading journal from The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson.

Period 2—Pre-AP 20
They’ve been given their assignment for Life of Pi.  They are creating an ABC booklet.

Period 3—ELA A 30
We’re into Canadian landscapes at the moment.
As a motivational set, Mrs. Adelman asked the students what kind of things would HAVE to be included if they were to write a poem about the Canadian Landscape.  Why would they make these choices? Then, they read the poem, “The Lonely Land” by AJM Smith and discussed what the poem means.  The students have recently analyzed poems using a TPCASTT model:            T= assess the title, make predictions, etc.
            P= paraphrase the poem
C=connotation—look at implied meanings of the poem that you might see through literary devices such as alliteration, imagery, comparisons, etc.
A= attitude or tone that seems to be prevalent in the poem
            S=Shifts in tone—where and why
T=look at the title again—were you right in your predictions?  How has the content of the poem changed the meaning of the title?
T=theme—what is it?  In order to find theme, FOCUS + INSIGHT = THEME

Period 4—Pre-AP 10
They are doing the ABC assignment, so this is time for them to work on it.

Tuesday, 15 May 2012

May 15, 2012

Period 1--ELA A 30/AP 30
We continued working on our Lord of the Flies and  Sgt. John Wilson assignments.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We began our discussion of Life of Pi today.  I have a power point presentation that covers a lot of the main points.  We spend considerable time evaluating the concept of truth and versimilitude.

Period 3--ELA A 30We finished reading the short story "The Lamp at Noon" and the students had some questions to work on.  After they were done the question, they were expected to fill out a Venn Diagram showing the similarities and differences between "The Lamp at Noon" and "The Painted Door."

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
I gave them their timed writes back from awhile ago--I had totally forgotten to do this, so my apologies!  Then, I introduced the assignment.  Like the grade 11s, tehy will be doing an ABC deep analysis of the novel Fahrenheit 451.  They had time to work on this for the remainder of the class.

Monday, 14 May 2012

May 14,2012

Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30
As promised, this was time for the students to finish working on their essay.  The students doing the "regular" course were working on their Sgt. John reading log assignment given to them by Mr. McJannet.  This will be the same for the rest of this week.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We continued and finished looking at the two companion poems by Blake with "Holy Thursday."  After we analyzed the poems, I gave them their assignment for Life of Pi.   We'll be doing a deeper reading of the novel by creating am ABC book with a partner.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We were called down to the gym for an assembly today where Mr. McJannet shared some fo the good, bad, and ugly the school is dealing with right now.  We are in the home stretch for grade 12, so the students need to buckle down and make sure that they get their work done.

After the assembly, we came back and were almost able to finish reading "The Lamp at Noon" by Sinclair Ross.  We'll finish it up tomorrow.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
We finished the power point on the novel today after some excellent discussion about censorship.  We spent some time on the internet looking at some of the recently banned books.  Quite a few of the books on the list were surprises to students and it really brought the message home to them from Fahrenheit 451.  They particularly enjoyed the irony of several schools banning a book on censorship!

May 11, 2012

Period 1--AP 30
We're tying up some loose ends from our AP world before we move on with the regular ELA A 30 course load.  They need to write their "monster" essay for Lord of the Flies that requires them to use secondary sources.  We reviewed the essay prompts and I made some secondary sources available to them.  They will get all their ELA classes next week to work on this.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We spent the entire class talking about William Blake's "The Tyger" and its comparison to "The Lamb."  I introduced the premise of the two "Holy Thursday" poems to them which we will continue with on Monday.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We first reviewed the events of the short story "The Painted Door" before we finished reading the rest of the story.  We discussed the character motivations:  Why did Ann have an affair?  Why did John go to help his father?  Why did he come back?  Did he commit suicide?  How will Steven feel about the death of John.  Before the bell rang, we looked at the three characters and came up with characterisitcs of each.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
We continued with our study of the deeper ideas in Fahrenheit 451.  We went through the main characters and are just examining the theme of censorship.

Thursday, 10 May 2012

May 10, 2012

Period 1--AP 30
The big day has finally arrived!!!!  The students spent the morning writing their AP exams.  They came out smiling, so hopefully that is a good sign.  They will find their marks out the first week of July.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We started looking at some poetry by William Blake--after going through some background information on Blake and looking at his unique way of looking at the world, we moved in to look at "The Tyger" and "The Lamb."  We finished with "The Lamb" and will discuss the companion poem tomorrow.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We spent some time discussing the various landscapes across our country to start the class off.  From there, we moved into the short story "The Painted Door" by Sinclair Ross.  We weren't quite finished reading it, so we'll do that tomorrow.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
We started out the class by finishing off Jekyll and Hyde with a Prezi presentation I made.  It looked at the format of the novella and its major themes.  Then, we moved into Fahrenheit 451.  I have a power point presentation I'm going through with them, but we spent considerable time discussion the parallels between Bradbury's fictious world and our own, especially in regards to media and the degredation of society.

Wednesday, 9 May 2012

May 9, 2012

We had our school wide track and field meet today, so I was out helping out.  Most of the senior students, who weren't a part of the track team, were expected to be at school for the day and in class.  This is what was left for them to work on:

Period 1--AP 30
I stuck around for part of this class to help them get ready for tomorrow.  We had a close look at some of the larger pieces of literature we studied this year and looked for similarities between them which would allow them to choose the one that they know best.  Essentially, we were talking about choices based on common questions that have been asked in the last.

Good luck tomorrow!!!!

Period 2--Pre-AP 10
The students were supposed to use this class to finish up out standing assignments.  If everything was finished, they should be working on finishing their reading for Life of Pi.  They can consider or plan out what they will use for their ABC book that they'll have to make.

Period 3--ELA A 30
Last class to work on their movie review.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
This is a repeat of yesterday.  Time to clean up old assignments, finish reading their novel and looking ahead to their novel assignment.

May 8, 2012

Sorry I didn't get this up yesterday, but better late than never!

Period 1--AP 30
We spent this class talking about strategies for the multiple choice selection and essay responses.  This was mostly a question and answer period and an effort to waylay some of their fears before their exam on Thursday.

Period 2--Pre-AP 10
We finished discussing "The Fly" today with a focus on the characterization.  We had a question sheet and they had time to consider the answers and then we discussed them together as a class.   From there, we talked about their assignment for Life of Pi which will be an ABC type assignment.

Period 3--ELA A 30
They used this period to work on their movie review.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
I had to scoot out to get a root canal (ughh--but it all worked out well) so the kids had this class period to finish reading Fahrenheit 451 and work on their chapter annotations for Jekyll and Hyde.  This will be what they have to complete tomorrow too.

Monday, 7 May 2012

May 7, 2012

Period 1--AP 30
I gave the students back a timed write which we discussed today.  They learned an importnat lesson about the importance of titles for poetry with this timed write.  Then I handed out a sample mulitple choice section exam for them to work on.  They spent the class working on these as if it were the "real" exam.

Period 2--Pre-AP 10
I gave them their timed writes from Othello back today and we spoke, in general, about some of the mistakes they made in their writing.  Then, we finished correcting the multiple choice questions we did for this story last Friday.  From there, we had a handout with some deeper level questions on the short story.  This is homework for the kids and we'll correct them tomorrow.

Period 3--ELA A 30
The students had this class to work on their movie review for Strange Brew.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
This class was hijacked from me today by Mrs. Stephenson who needed to do some career guidance with them.  They worked on building a portfolio.

Saturday, 5 May 2012

May 4, 2012

Whoops, sorry I forgot to post yesterday.  This is what Friday looked like:

Period 1--AP 30
We finished our discussion of Lord of the Flies and with the few minutes remaining, we reviewed each of the major pieces of literature we examined throughout the year.  The list was fairly impressive!  Their homework over the weekend was to review each of those works for theme, main characters, and important symbols or motifs.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
First of all, we did their literary devices quiz.  Then, we finished reading the short story "The Fly."  Finally, the students did some multiple choice questions to go with the short story.  WE weren't quite finished taking them up, so we'll complete that on Monday.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We finished our viewing of Strange Brew and added to the list of Canadian stereotypes.  We spent considerable time discussing the projected audiences of this movie as well as discussed our idea of what "Canadian humour" is.  Their immediate assignment for this is to write a movie review.  They were given a handout with step-by-step instructions as to how to write one and will get some time to do so on Monday.  We finsihed the class off with viewing the original SCTV skits of "The Great White North" so the kids know where the premise for the movie came from.  As a treat for Friday, we viewed a few clips from Rick Mercer's "Talking to Americans" until the bell rang.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
As a special treat, a concert and jazz band from Invermere, BC visited our school today.  Since half my class consists of band students who were required to attend, I got permission for the remainder of the class to attend.  It was an impressive concert, so congratulations certainly go out to those band students from Invermere.

Thursday, 3 May 2012

May 3, 2012

Period 1--AP 30
We did our pre-registration work for next week's exam.  The students have so many different things going on in the next few days and they were all here today, so we thought we'd get some of the administrative duties out of the way so they are ready to just write next Thursday.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We finished critiquing the critics' responses to the short story "Little Things" today.  We started reading the short story "The Fly" by Katherine Mansfield.   We aren't quite finished reading it, so we'll clean that up tomorrow.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We are almost finished viewing Strange Brew and will start in on our stereotyping assignment tomorrow.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
The students had this period to work on their chapter annotations for Jekyll and Hyde.  They will get tomorrow as well.  I've set the due date for May 22nd.

Wednesday, 2 May 2012

May 2, 2012

Period 1--AP 30
We reviewed important aspects of the novel, Lord of the Flies through a power point lecture today.  We will finish with this tomorrow.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
We compared the short story "Little Things" to the biblical story about the Wisdom of Solomon.  We looked at thematic implications, similarities and differences between the stories, and the different purposes of the narrator.  Then, we moved to looking at critiques of Carver's work.  I read the various critiques aloud and the students had to look for important words or phrases in the critique, indicate whether or not they agreed with the critic, and then whether or not it applies to the short story.  We didn't finish going over them, so we'll do that tomorrow.

Period 3--ELA A 30
We discussed stereotypes again today and then apllied those stereotypes as we start to view Strange Brew.  We'll continue wit this viewing tomorrow and then the students will work on their assignments that accompany the viewing activity.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
The grade 10s were not at school today as they took part in the PARTY program that educates students about choices they make and the possible consequences they might have.  Students would have been exposed to a mock crash site with students as the victims (and perhaps perpetrator), the emergency room hospital, a mock funeral, and informational sessions.  This is a valuable experience for them.

Tuesday, 1 May 2012

May 1, 2012

Period 1--AP 30
We finished discussing Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.  It certainly brought up some interesting notions of the ambiguity of language, the purpose in life, and the concept of truth.  We just started in with Lord of the Flies when the bell rang to end class.

Period 2--Pre-AP 20
For the first bit of class, I took the kids who hadn't yet completed the course selection survey to the computer lab to do so.  Then we did the mulitple choice questions that correspond with the short story, "Little Things."  We corrected them together as a class, and that was pretty much the end of the period!

Period 3--ELA A 30
We corrected the questions for the play based on Medicine River together as a class.  Once we wound that up, we re-visted the common stereotypes of Canada and then looked at a few commercials that highlight these stereotypes--notably, Tim Hortons and Molson Canadian commercials that do so.  From here, we will be viewing Strange Brew to examine Canadian stereotypes in media.

Period 4--Pre-AP 10
We finished reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde today, so now the students will have a couple of days to annotate their chosen chapter.
