Period 1--ELA B 30
We viewed Ophelia's mad scene and discussed some of the differences between Ophelia's madness and Hamlet's madness (if it can be called so). We spend some time discussing character motivation as well--why is Claudius doing this? Laertes? Ophelia? We also looked at the many ways that other characters foil Hamlet, particularly Laertes in light of his quick move to take action against Claudius. We continued to read to the end of Act IV where we learned about Hamlet's "rescue" from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Fortinbras' army marching across Denmark (another foil to Hamlet), and finally, the news of Ophelia's death. We ended the class discussing whether or not she committed suicide and how this might impact her funeral.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30
We read Act IV, scene i, ii, iii, and iv together. Then, we spend time viewing Ophelia's mad scene. See the entry for period 1 to get some of the details from the discussion we had with this class about the scene. It was quite similar today.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
We finished going over a brief outline of the Russian Revoltuion and then I introduced their assignment. They have to creat a character sketch using multi-media about any of the characters from Animal Farm. We also spoke about how this novel could work in reflecting virtually any revolution--World War II being another strong example. I also have History with many of these kids and they were able to find similarities in the French Revolution and the English civil war/Glorious Revolution too. After they are done this unique character sketch (many are doing them as facebook profile pages), they'll have to research the "real" person (from the Russian Revoltuion) and do a report on him/her. This will have to be presented to the class so we can all share in the understanding of the characters and real-life players of the Revolution. We have tomorrow and Friday to work in the computer lab as well.
Period 4--History 10
We corrected their review exam together as a class. They seem to know the information very well. We also got off on a few tangents talking about American politics and the presidential race and economic problems. I always find it interesting that they are so knowledgable about American politics, yet know little about our own country's politics! We'll get started on their project for this unit tomorrow.
Period 5--History 30
We continued our discussions about treaties and land claims. Once we finished, we started having a look at residential schools. We will continue this tomorrow and then will be onto Canada in the World Ward on Friday.
