Period 1--AP 30/ELA A 30 (Canadian Literature)
We are going to be able to split up these two courses until the AP kids are finished with their AP exam in May. At this point, the two classes will join up again. In the meantime, Mr. McJannet is going to take over the ELA A 30 students, so , for the most part, I won't be able to keep you up to date, but we do intend to stick pretty close to the same content. So if parents with students in period 1 ELA A 30 read what I'm doing with the period 3 class of ELA A 30, you should have a good idea of what Mr. McJannet is doing with his class. On occassion, when Mr. McJannet needs to attend to situations at the office, the A 30 class will come back with me.
For today, the ELA A 30s had their course outline and we brainstormed what it means to be Canadian until Mr. McJannet was able to get there for them. They will meet regularly in the Home Ec sewing lab (except for tomorrow when they will come to me because Mr. McJannet is away at meetings).
APs--we had a look at their questions from their final exam. We spent time together analyzing the poems and deciding what a decent thesis statement would consist of. We started looking at the irony in "Reginald's Choir" from their final exam. After we are done with this, the kids will do some thesis practice and then start in on some neo-classical poetry.
Period 2--Pre-AP 20
I gave the students their course outline and we went over writing expectations as well as general course expectations. The students realize that it will be more work than a regular class. It took some time to go through as this is their first experience with an AP class. I handed out the AP Resources Booklet that I made up over the summer and guided them through some of the important aspects of the booklet.
Period 3--ELA A 30
We stared out this class on Canadian Literature with a course outline and a look at the two themes: Diverse Voices and Diverse Landscapes. We brainstormed together what it means to be a Canadian and spent considerable time talking about stereotypes other people have about Canadians and whether or not they have some basis in truth. We must sadly report that we do not all live in igloos not have moose or beavers as pets! We then started discussing our unique Canadian dialects which, of course, led to a discussion of the bizarre idiolects (local speech patterns) here in Outlook. They were given a handout on "Do You Speak Canadian?" and we're just going through that and will finish tomorrow.
Period 4--Pre-AP 10
Now that these kids are more comfortable with the Pre-AP class, my plan is for them to do a bit more reading and writing. I gave them a course outline with the required texts and course expectations. I assigned Dracula to be read by the end of the month. In order to do some "pre-reading" we did a K-W-L about Dracula and vampires (no Twilight references allowed!) and then looked at a power point where I showed them some of the basis for Stoker's novel, focussing on Vlad the Impaler and some of his nasty deeds. They will have a few tasks to do while they read, but we'll go over that tomorrow.
Period 5--I have a prep! Yay!
This is a blog designed to help students keep aware of what was done in class either as a reminder or as information if they were absent. Parents are also welcome to keep track of what is going on in our classroom!

The students had time to study and clearn up any assignments they had left outstanding.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30 split
ELA B 30--Time to finish assignments and to study for their final exam.
AP 30--We went over the answers for their mulitple choice questions. Then, we looked through the AP Resource Booklet I made for them and we discussed various ways of preparing for their final exam tomorrow.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
We finished up the speeches and project presentations. We then discussed how to study for their mulitple choice exam tomorrow.
Period 4--History 10
We took at speedy trip through the French Revolution as a review today and played Jeopardy too!
Period 5--History 30
Their final History class to study. They were given a sheet with terms from each unit that they should be familiar with!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE KIDS ON THEIR FINAL EXAMS!

Period 1--ELA B 30
We finished our dicussion of Night in this class by looking at the changes in Elie (physically and mentally) throughout his internment at Auschwitz and the other concentration camps. Once we were finished with our discussions and readings (facillitated by filling out the timeline of events and personality changes), the kids were assigned a paragraph to write comparing Elie at the beginning of the book to Elie and the point of liberation. Their final exam is on Tuesday afternoon.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30 split
ELA B 30-- as above (period 1 content was the same as in period 2)
AP 30--The students were given this period to finish their question paragraph on The Great Gatsby. Once they were finished that, they were given some practice multiple choice questions to work on to get ready for their final exam on Tuesday afternoon. The AP class had a vote as to when they want to write their multiple choice section of their exam. Since it was a tie, I broke the tie and told them that they will write their exam Tuesday morning at 9:00 am in my room. We'll go over answers for the multiple choice practice questions they did today on Monday.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
We continued with their speeches on an importnat issue. I continue to be impressed with the quality of these speeches. We should be able to finish them up on Monday. The kids will write the multiple choice section of their exam on Tuesday in period 3. Their final exam is Wednesday.
Period 4--History 10
We continued reviewing for their final which is on Friday. We went over the Industrial Revolution and economic decision making today.
Period 5--History 30
We looked at the last 50+ years of Canadian History today. We did this by just looking at some importatn points. It certainly was not a comprehensive look at recent Canadian history, rather just some "snap shots" but it will suffice for their exam next Wednesday.

Period 1--ELA B 30
We continued our discussion of Night and important events in Elie's life at the concentration camp. This was interspersed with readings from the book to help guide the students into a better understanding of Elie's thoughts and feelings.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30 split
ELA B 30--There were only 4 students again today (because of the severe cold) but we forged ahead anyway. We worked through Elie's timeline and discussed important events from his time at the concentration camp. Again, I read excerpts from the book to help them understand.
AP 30--The students had the class to work on their question paragraph from Gatsby. Once they finished this, they had some practice AP mulitple choice questions to work on.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
There were just a few multi-media projects to continue with today and then I lectured the students on a few ideas that may have been overlooked about the novel. After this, we began our speeches.
Period 4--History 10
In an effort to get ready for their final exam, we backtracked to the first unit of History and had an overview of Medieval times, the Renaissance, Reformation and Counter-Reformation, Englightenment, and Scientific Revolution. We'll get through as much as we can in the next few days.
Period 5--History 30
We cruised through Canada's role in World War II, its contributions at home and abroad.

Period 1--ELA B 30
With it being -33 and the windchill making it over -45, the busses weren't running today. That meant that I only had 4 students in class. I allowed them some time to work on assignments that were outstanding.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30 split
Most of the AP class showed up, so we continued discussing Great Gatsby. Toward the end of the class, the students came up with various questions that they still had about the novel. We spent some time answering them and then tomorrow, the students will be working on a question paragraph. On Friday, they'll be doing a timed write on Gatsby.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
We finished up a few multi-media project presentations today.
Period 4--History 10
Again, with so few kids here, we had a work period.
Period 5--History 30
We continued with the last 100 years and dealt with the "interwar years" including the Great Depression. We'll quickly look at Canada's roll in World War II tomorrow and then hit some high lights of the last 50 years on Friday.

Period 1--ELA B 30
We viewed some pictures from the Holocaust today to give the students a visual of some of the events Elie Weisel was depicting in his book. It was a solemn first part of the class, but a good "look" into the situation he lived through. From there, we spent some time going over the timeline. The students chose an event that impacted Elie's personality and then I found the event in the book, read it, and we spoke about the changes it made in the young boy.
Period 2--ELA B 30
As above, we viewed pictures from the Holocaust. The students worked in partners or small groups to complete the timeline of Elie's life and stay in the concentration camp.
AP 30
They sat through the pictures of the Holocuast even though they were reading Gatsby. Unfortunately, I can't split myself in two and I needed to introduce the other topic. Once the other part of the class were working on their timeline, the APs went through a power point on Gatsby with me. So far, we examined the concept of the American Dream and how this book portrays that dream. We were just looking at a few of the themes and motifs when the bell rang and will continue this tomorrow.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
They continued with their presentations on Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution. We'll finish these up tomorrow and then get into the speeches that are due tomorrow.
Period 4--History 10
This was their last class to work on their Glorious Revolution or English Civil War project. It is due on Friday.
Period 5--History 30
We continued to discuss the last 100 years or so in History. We are moving quickly through the Great Depression and will deal with World War II tomorrow and Thursday.

Period 1--ELA B 30
Today we started in with the novel study of Night by Elie Weisel. The students had been assigned to read this for today. We talked briefly about the book and then I gave the students a handout with their assignment for the rest of the week on it. The first thing they need to do is think about four events from the novel that impacted Elie and what his personality was like at each event. From here, they need to think about how Elie's personality changed throughout the course of his ordeal. Toward the end of the class, we played a Jeopardy game to remind them of the some of the events in the novel.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30 split
We finished watching the last scene of Hamlet today. We continued to examine the movie vs. the text for inconsistencies. As well, we discussed some of the motivations of Claudius as he allows Gertrude to drink the poisoned wine. I handed out some summaries of the last three Acts (we had to abandon writing our own summaries since the final exam is looming next week). With the remainder of the class, the students were asked to write down one question they still have about the play. We shared these questions and spent some time answering them together in a class discussion. Tomorrow we will be working on Gatsby for the AP students and Night for the regular ELA class.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
We started our presentations of Animal Farm today. The students were presenting their "real" characters so we can make the connection between the fictional animal in Animal Farm and the real counterpart in the Russian Revolution.
Period 4--History 10
This is the second last class to work on their project on the Glorious Revolution. We'll be starting some review on Wednesday.
Period 5--History 30
We continued to look at Canada's role in World War I. We ended the class with a discussion of the "War Measure's Act" and whether the students think it is a good thing to have or a bad thing.

Period 1--ELA B 30
We finished reading Act V for Hamlet halfway through class. The students wanted to view the final scene to see how the director dealt with some of the inconsistencies (why did Laertes die before Hamlet when Hamlet was cut by the poisoned sword first!). We viewed the last scene and the bell rang just as we finished. We'll spend a few minutes tying loose ends on Monday and then onto Night.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30
We finished viewing the Gravedigger's scene with lots of stops along the way to explain and discuss. In the interest of time, we elected to simply view the final scene but the students needed to follow along in their playbooks. We stopped at various times and discussed some of the director's choices. We didn't quite finish the play, so will do so on Monday and then move onto their novel studies.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
We went to the computer lab to continue working on their second part of the Animal Farm mulit-media project. Students will begin presenting their information on Monday for this. They are reminded to have their speeches ready to go for Wednesday.
Period 4--History 10
They had time to work on their Glorious Revolution/English civil war projects. They will get two more classes (in the computer lab) to finish this up.
Period 5--History 30
We reviewed the events leading up to World War I and Canada's involvement in the Great War. We spent time discussing such topics as conscription, obligation, and alliances.

Period 1--ELA B 30
We started Act V today and viewed the Gravedigger's scene, noting the clever puns and literal language used by the gravedigger. The theme of the leveling power of death is evident throughout this scene and we see more of Hamlet's thoughtful side. This is juxtaposed almost immediately by his discovery of Ophelia's death and his subsequent argument with Laertes over the body of Ophelia. We continued to read scene ii, but did not get quite finished. We'll finish up the play tomorrow.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30 split
We read the last few scenes of Act IV (see yesterday's post from period 1 for some of the topics of converstaion). We just started viewing the gravedigger's scene at the end of class. We should also finish the play tomorrow by both viewing and reading Act V.
Note: A reminder to all "regular" students that they need to have Night read by Monday. The AP students need to have The Great Gatsby read by Monday.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
The students continued with their projects today. They should be finishing Part I of their assignment and working on Part II which requires more research! I am enjoying the Facebook pages the students created as character sketches from Animal Farm. We will have our last class to work on the computer tomorrow. STudents will have to present their information on Monday. A reminder to these students that they will be presenting their speeches starting next Wednesday.
Period 4--History 10
The students were allowed to start their assignments for the Glorious Revolution. They could choose between diary entries, storyboards, research assignments, and others as to how they would like to show off their knowledge about the topic. They will have tomorrow and a good chunk of next week to work on this!
Period 5--History 30
We finished viewing a power point on Residential Schools today and also read Prime Minister Steven Harper's apology to Indian Residential School Survivors. We will be starting Canada's role in the world wars tomorrow.

January 11, 2012
Period 1--ELA B 30
We viewed Ophelia's mad scene and discussed some of the differences between Ophelia's madness and Hamlet's madness (if it can be called so). We spend some time discussing character motivation as well--why is Claudius doing this? Laertes? Ophelia? We also looked at the many ways that other characters foil Hamlet, particularly Laertes in light of his quick move to take action against Claudius. We continued to read to the end of Act IV where we learned about Hamlet's "rescue" from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Fortinbras' army marching across Denmark (another foil to Hamlet), and finally, the news of Ophelia's death. We ended the class discussing whether or not she committed suicide and how this might impact her funeral.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30
We read Act IV, scene i, ii, iii, and iv together. Then, we spend time viewing Ophelia's mad scene. See the entry for period 1 to get some of the details from the discussion we had with this class about the scene. It was quite similar today.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
We finished going over a brief outline of the Russian Revoltuion and then I introduced their assignment. They have to creat a character sketch using multi-media about any of the characters from Animal Farm. We also spoke about how this novel could work in reflecting virtually any revolution--World War II being another strong example. I also have History with many of these kids and they were able to find similarities in the French Revolution and the English civil war/Glorious Revolution too. After they are done this unique character sketch (many are doing them as facebook profile pages), they'll have to research the "real" person (from the Russian Revoltuion) and do a report on him/her. This will have to be presented to the class so we can all share in the understanding of the characters and real-life players of the Revolution. We have tomorrow and Friday to work in the computer lab as well.
Period 4--History 10
We corrected their review exam together as a class. They seem to know the information very well. We also got off on a few tangents talking about American politics and the presidential race and economic problems. I always find it interesting that they are so knowledgable about American politics, yet know little about our own country's politics! We'll get started on their project for this unit tomorrow.
Period 5--History 30
We continued our discussions about treaties and land claims. Once we finished, we started having a look at residential schools. We will continue this tomorrow and then will be onto Canada in the World Ward on Friday.

Period 5--History 30
We continued our discussions about treaties and land claims. Once we finished, we started having a look at residential schools. We will continue this tomorrow and then will be onto Canada in the World Ward on Friday.

Period 1--ELA B 30
We finished watching the Closet scene of Hamlet today and discussed it in detail. One of the things we have to look forward to is the idea of people being caught in deceptions of their own making, as was Polonius. They have the plot Hamlet unleashes on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to look forward to. We read Act IV, scenes i,ii,iii, and iv and will watch Ophelia's mad scene tomorrow.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30
We finished reading the climax and examined the irony of the prayer Claudius composes and Hamlet's decision not to kill him at that moment. We finished watching the Closet scene, with many stops for discussion along the way. We will read Act IV tomorrow.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
We started in on Animal Farm today and learned a bit about Socialism/Marxism as well as George Orwell and the definitions of allegories and fables. We spent a few fun moments trying to determine what animal we most resemble (characteristicallly speaking, of course!). We will finish going over an outline of what the Russian Revolution was about and their assignment and then off to the computer lab tomorrow.
Period 4--History 10
The students used this class to finish their open-book review (an old exam). There will not be an exam for this unit; rather, we'll be doing a project! We will correct tomorrow.
Period 5--History 30
We spent the class looking at a powerpoint (the students have the handout of it) on treaties and the Indian Act. We didn't quite finish this, but will do so tomorrow.

WECOME BACK AFTER OUR VERY LONG CHRISTMAS BREAK!!!
Period 1--ELA B 30
We jumped right back to work to hinish Hamlet off today. This class had finished the Nunnery scene and so we viewed the Mousetrap scene. We noticed the erratic behaviour of Hamlet and the debates are starting as to whether he is really mad or just acting. We then read the climax of the play and noted the irony of Claudius's inability to pray sincerely even though Hamlet "let" him live due to Claudius's seeming virtue. The bell rang just as we were getting into the Closet scene.
Period 2--ELA B 30/AP 30
Right to work for this class too! We had to finish reading the Nunnery scene, noting the perfect "Renaissance woman" in Ophelia! From there, we watched the Mousetrap scene and we stopped often to clarify characters' meanings and motivations. We will read the climax of the play tomorrow and continue from there.
Period 3--Pre-AP 10
This is the students' last class to work on their speech preparation. Their speeches will be delivered next Wednesday and Thursday. We will be starting in on Animal Farm tomorrow.
Period 4--History 10
We finished the English Civil War and Glorious Revolution unit right before the Christmas break but didn't have a chance for any assessment. What I'm having the kids do is get into group of 4 or 5 and 've given them last year's exam on the unit. They work together as a group to answer all the questions which serves as a nice review for the unit. We didn't finish this today, but will do so tomorrow and take it up.
Period 5--History 30
This is the students' last class to work on their business letter as responsible citizens. They need to select an issue and write a letter to a person in powe in an effort to either support a change or to affect a change in society. There was some interesting converstaion about changes that could be made federally, provincially and in our town! These letters need to be done by Friday.
